ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Pine Barrens Craft Made by Neighbors

Blue Rascal Distillery sits on West End Avenue in Hammonton, New Jersey, in the heart of the Pine Barrens. Founded by John and Lisa Cifelli, this craft distillery opened its doors in 2019 after the couple decided to turn their passion for spirits into a full-time venture. John brought his background in food service and hospitality, while Lisa contributed her business acumen to create what they call a “neighborhood distillery.” The operation runs out of a converted industrial space that they’ve transformed into a working distillery and tasting room, producing vodka, gin, and seasonal spirits using locally sourced ingredients when possible. The Cifellis didn’t take the typical route to distilling. After years of experimenting with home distillation and attending craft spirits events, they decided to make the leap from hobbyists to professional distillers. They spent two years navigating permits and regulations before finally opening, working with local officials to establish one of the few distilleries in the area. The name “Blue Rascal” reflects their playful approach to the business, and they’ve built their brand around being approachable and unpretentious while still taking the craft seriously. Visitors find a laid-back atmosphere where you can watch production happen in real time. The tasting room has a neighborhood bar feel rather than a polished tourist destination, which is exactly what the Cifellis wanted. You’ll often find John or Lisa behind the bar explaining their process, and they’re genuinely excited to talk about what they’re making. The space isn’t huge, but it feels comfortable, and the focus stays on the spirits rather than flashy presentation.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Owners Behind the Bar Every Single Time

Blue Rascal stands out because it’s genuinely a local operation run by people who live in the community. The Cifellis source ingredients locally when possible and have built relationships with area farms for their seasonal offerings. They’re also one of the few distilleries in the Pine Barrens region, giving them access to the area’s unique water profile. What really sets them apart is their approach to customer interaction – this isn’t a corporate tasting room experience. You’re likely to be served by the actual owners, and they’ll remember you if you come back. They also focus on spirits that work well in cocktails rather than just sipping spirits, reflecting John’s restaurant background and understanding of how people actually drink.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Neighborhood Bar Vibe Real Distillers Pouring

When you visit Blue Rascal, you’re walking into what feels more like a neighborhood bar than a formal distillery tour. The space is compact but comfortable, with the production equipment visible from the tasting area. John or Lisa will usually be the ones pouring your tastings, and they’re genuinely interested in explaining their process and getting your feedback on the spirits. You can see the copper still and fermentation tanks while you taste, and they’re happy to walk you through what’s happening on any given day. The atmosphere is relaxed and conversational – this is where locals come to hang out, not just tourists passing through.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Skip the Tourist Traps Find the Real Thing

If you’re looking for a polished, corporate distillery experience, this isn’t it. But if you want to meet actual craft distillers who are passionate about what they’re making, Blue Rascal delivers. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the process and people who appreciate supporting truly local businesses. The spirits are well-made and the owners are knowledgeable, but you’re not going to get elaborate tours or fancy presentation. It’s worth visiting if you’re in the area and want an authentic craft distillery experience, especially if you’re interested in seeing how a small operation actually works day-to-day.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting since hours can vary based on production schedules. The distillery is small, so weekends can get busy – if you want more one-on-one time with the owners, weekday visits are better. Ask about whatever they’re currently distilling when you visit, since you might catch them in the middle of a run. They often have seasonal or experimental batches available that aren’t widely distributed, so inquire about what’s only available on-site. Parking is available on-site, and the location is pretty straightforward to find, though GPS should get you there without issues.
