Black Patch Distilling Company sits on Leeman Ferry Road in Huntsville, Alabama, tucked into a mixed-use office building that gives no hint from the outside of what’s happening in back. Founded in 2018 and named for the unmarked black patch worn by a special operations unit in the field, the distillery’s original bourbon recipe was developed by founder Gary Cooper while his son Clayton was on deployment overseas. Clayton returned home after being seriously wounded in combat and helped finish the recipe his father started, and that bourbon hasn’t changed since. The distillery relocated from its original Madison, Alabama location to Huntsville in 2025 under new ownership, when father-son duo Drew and Jacob Tyriver took over the operation. The Tyrivers bring decades of combined experience in food and beverage and engineering to the business, and have carried the distillery’s founding history forward in both the story they tell and the products on the shelf. Beyond the flagship bourbon and rye, Black Patch produces a small, flavor-forward lineup that includes Blue Agave Spirits, Blue Agave Whiskey, HEAT Cinnamon Whiskey, and a Pecan Pie Liqueur that’s become one of the distillery’s signature pours.
