ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Carroll County's First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition

Patapsco Distilling Company sits in historic Sykesville, Maryland, where founders Joe and Carol Powers transformed a former antique shop into Carroll County’s first distillery since Prohibition. The Powers opened their doors in 2019 after years of planning and navigating state regulations, bringing small-batch bourbon and rye production to this railroad town along the Patapsco River. Joe, a former government contractor, and Carol, who worked in healthcare administration, decided to pursue their passion for craft spirits after taking distilling classes and realizing Maryland needed more local whiskey producers. The journey wasn’t simple—Maryland’s distilling laws required changes to allow for on-site sales and tastings, which the Powers helped advocate for alongside other craft distillers in the state. They installed a 250-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works and began producing bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits in small batches. Joe handles most of the distilling operations while Carol manages the business side and customer experience. Their philosophy centers on using locally-sourced grains when possible and aging their whiskeys in 15 and 30-gallon barrels to accelerate the maturation process. The tasting room occupies the front of their Main Street location, where visitors can sample their spirits and learn about the distilling process through large windows that look directly into the production area. You can watch Joe working the still during production days, and the space maintains the intimate feel of a family operation where you’re likely to meet the owners during your visit. They focus on educating visitors about the craft of distilling rather than just pouring samples, making it feel more like a masterclass than a typical tasting room experience.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Small Barrels Mean Bigger Flavor

Patapsco Distilling holds the distinction of being Carroll County’s first legal distillery since Prohibition ended, making them pioneers in their local market. They use smaller 15 and 30-gallon barrels instead of the standard 53-gallon barrels, which accelerates the aging process and creates more wood contact per ounce of whiskey. Joe Powers personally sources many of their grains from Maryland farms, including corn from the Eastern Shore, connecting their spirits to the state’s agricultural heritage. The distillery also produces a unique Maryland-style rye whiskey that reflects the state’s historical connection to rye production, when Maryland rye was considered some of the finest in America before Prohibition.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Behind the Still

You’ll step into an intimate tasting room where Carol Powers often greets visitors personally and explains their story and process. Large windows separate the tasting area from the production floor, so you can watch Joe working the still on production days while learning about their methods. Tastings include their bourbon, rye, and any seasonal offerings, with Carol or Joe explaining the mash bills and aging process for each spirit. The experience feels conversational rather than scripted—you’re genuinely learning from the people who make the whiskey rather than following a corporate tour format.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling Not Corporate Theater

If you’re interested in seeing craft distilling at its most authentic level, Patapsco delivers exactly that experience. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate tasting spirits aged in smaller barrels and learning about Maryland’s rye whiskey heritage from people who are genuinely passionate about the craft. The intimate setting means you’ll have real conversations about distilling rather than rushing through a crowded tour, but don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive cocktail menus. This appeals most to people who want to understand the process and taste small-batch spirits rather than those looking for a party atmosphere or Instagram-worthy venue.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page for current hours and production schedules—visiting on a distilling day means you’ll see the operation in action. Parking is available on Main Street, but Sykesville can get busy on weekends when people visit the antique shops and restaurants. Ask about their barrel aging process and why they chose smaller barrels—it’s one of their most interesting production decisions. If you’re interested in Maryland rye history, Joe can tell you stories about the state’s pre-Prohibition whiskey reputation. Don’t expect a full restaurant, but Sykesville has several dining options within walking distance if you want to make it a longer visit.
