ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Real Working Distillery In Hocking Hills

Motherwell Distilling Co sits on West 2nd Street in Logan, Ohio, right in the heart of the Hocking Hills region. Founded by husband-and-wife team Matt and Amy Motherwell in 2019, this craft distillery emerged from Matt’s engineering background and Amy’s business acumen, combined with their shared passion for creating quality spirits. The operation runs out of a converted historic building that they’ve transformed into a working distillery and tasting room. They focus on small-batch bourbon, rye, and specialty spirits using traditional methods with modern precision. The Motherwells started this venture after years of home distilling and research, determined to bring craft distilling to southeastern Ohio. Matt handles the production side, drawing on his technical expertise to perfect recipes and processes, while Amy manages operations and the visitor experience. Their approach centers on quality ingredients sourced locally when possible, and they’re committed to being part of the Logan community rather than just another tourist stop.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Built From Scratch By Hand

What sets Motherwell apart is its genuine small-batch approach in an area where craft distilling is still relatively rare. The Motherwells literally built their operation from the ground up, installing their own equipment and designing their processes to maximize quality over quantity. Their location in the Hocking Hills gives them access to excellent water sources, and they’ve developed relationships with local grain suppliers when possible. Matt’s engineering background shows in their attention to detail—from precise temperature control to carefully monitored fermentation. They’re also one of the few distilleries in the region offering visitors a chance to see the entire process in action, from mash to bottle, in an intimate setting where you’re likely to meet the actual owners.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Actual Distillers

When you visit Motherwell, you’re stepping into a working distillery where the owners are often present and happy to talk shop. The space feels authentic—this isn’t a polished corporate experience but rather a chance to see craft distilling up close. Tours take you through their production process, and Matt or Amy frequently lead them personally, sharing stories about their journey and explaining their methods. The tasting room has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where you can sample their spirits and ask questions. You’ll smell the mash cooking and see the actual stills they use. It’s the kind of place where conversations happen naturally, and you leave feeling like you’ve met genuine people doing something they care about.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Genuine Craft Without The Corporate Polish

Motherwell is definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in seeing authentic craft distilling rather than a big production tour. This appeals most to people who want to understand the actual process and meet the folks behind the spirits. Don’t expect a Disney-level experience—this is real, hands-on distilling with all the charm and occasional rough edges that come with a true small business. If you’re looking for elaborate gift shops or restaurant dining, you might be disappointed. But if you want to taste quality spirits, learn about the craft, and support local entrepreneurs who are passionate about what they do, Motherwell delivers. The Hocking Hills location also makes it easy to combine with other regional attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting, as hours can vary seasonally and they sometimes close for production or private events. The distillery is easy to find on West 2nd Street, with parking available nearby. If you’re genuinely interested in the distilling process, don’t hesitate to ask technical questions—Matt loves talking about the craft and Amy knows the business side inside and out. Try their flagship bourbon if available, and ask about any seasonal releases they might have. The best times to visit are when they’re actively distilling, so you can see the process in action and smell the mash cooking. If you’re planning to buy bottles, bring cash just in case, though they likely accept cards too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Motherwell Distilling Co — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
While reservations aren’t strictly required, it’s smart to call ahead since this is a small operation. The owners are sometimes handling production or may be closed for private events, so a quick call ensures they’ll be ready for visitors.
Will I actually meet the owners during my visit?
Very likely, yes. Matt and Amy Motherwell are hands-on owners who are often present at the distillery. They frequently lead tours and tastings themselves, especially on weekends or when they’re not actively distilling.
What makes Motherwell different from larger distillery tours?
This is authentic small-batch distilling where you can see the entire operation and actually talk to the people making the spirits. It’s not a polished corporate experience but rather a genuine look at craft distilling from people who built their business from scratch.
