ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Navy Engineer Turned Franklin County Distiller

Twin Creeks Distillery sits on Franklin Street in Rocky Mount, Virginia, where husband-and-wife team David and Denise Mish transformed their passion for craft spirits into Franklin County’s newest addition to the moonshine trail. David, who spent years in the Navy before moving into engineering, partnered with Denise to open the distillery in 2016, focusing on traditional Virginia spirits with a modern twist. The operation runs out of a converted commercial space that they’ve outfitted with custom copper stills and aging equipment, creating everything from traditional moonshine to aged whiskeys and flavored spirits. The Mishes didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. David’s engineering background proved invaluable when designing their distillation setup, while Denise handles much of the business operations and customer experience. They’ve built relationships with local farmers for their grain sourcing and take pride in being part of Franklin County’s storied moonshine heritage while operating completely above board. The couple wanted to create something that honored the area’s distilling tradition while producing spirits that could compete with anything coming out of Kentucky or Tennessee. Visitors find a no-nonsense operation where you can actually talk to the people making your spirits. The space feels more like a working distillery than a polished tourist destination, which means you get to see the real process and hear stories about everything from recipe development to the challenges of getting permits in Virginia. David often leads tours himself, explaining the technical aspects of distillation while sharing stories about their journey from concept to bottles on the shelf.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Engineering Precision Meets Mountain Moonshine Heritage

Twin Creeks operates in Franklin County, which bills itself as the moonshine capital of the world, giving them access to both the area’s distilling heritage and the local grain sources that made the region famous for white whiskey production. David’s Navy and engineering background shows up in their precise approach to distillation and quality control, while their small scale allows them to experiment with recipes and techniques that larger operations can’t touch. They’re building their reputation one batch at a time, focusing on spirits that reflect Virginia’s agricultural heritage rather than trying to copy what’s coming out of Kentucky.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Not the Marketing Team

Tours at Twin Creeks feel like visiting friends who happen to make really good spirits. You’ll likely meet David or Denise, who can walk you through their entire process from grain to glass and explain why they make certain choices in their recipes and aging. The space has that working distillery feel where you can see everything happening and smell the mash cooking. Tastings let you sample their current lineup while learning about the differences between their various spirits and hearing stories about the trial and error that went into perfecting each recipe.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Franklin County Authenticity Without the Tourist Crowds

If you’re interested in the craft distilling process and want to support a local operation that’s still building its reputation, Twin Creeks offers an authentic experience without the crowds you’ll find at more established Virginia distilleries. You won’t get the polished visitor center experience of bigger operations, but you will get to meet the actual people making the spirits and understand what goes into starting a distillery from scratch. It’s particularly appealing if you’re doing a Franklin County moonshine trail tour and want to see how modern craft distillers are building on the area’s heritage.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to make sure someone’s available to show you around, as this is still a small operation where the owners wear multiple hats. The distillery is located right on Franklin Street, so parking shouldn’t be an issue. Ask David about his engineering approach to distillation if you’re interested in the technical side, or have Denise walk you through their product development process. Since they’re still building their aged spirit inventory, focus on their white spirits and newer releases to get the best sense of what they’re capable of producing.
