ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Glass-Walled Distillery Where You See Everything

Trial & Error Distillery opened in 2019 in Richmond’s Scott’s Addition neighborhood, founded by husband-and-wife team Matt and Jess Brophy. Matt left his career in finance while Jess transitioned from marketing, both drawn to the craft of distilling after years of home experimentation. Their 3,000-square-foot facility on West Main Street houses a 500-gallon copper still and showcases their commitment to transparency in production – you can literally see every step of their process through floor-to-ceiling windows. They focus primarily on whiskey, gin, and seasonal spirits, with everything made from grain to glass on-site. The name reflects their honest approach to craft distilling – acknowledging that great spirits come from learning, adjusting, and perfecting recipes over time. Matt handles production while Jess manages operations, and they’ve built a reputation for being approachable and educational with visitors. The facility doubles as both production space and tasting room, creating an intimate experience where you’re watching spirits being made while you sample them. Their philosophy centers on quality over speed, aging their whiskeys properly rather than rushing products to market. Since opening, they’ve expanded their offerings and become a fixture in Richmond’s growing craft spirits scene.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

True Grain to Glass Behind Clear Windows

What sets Trial & Error apart is their radical transparency in production – the entire distillery operates behind glass walls, so visitors can watch every step of the distillation process in real-time. Unlike many craft distilleries that source neutral grain spirits, everything here is truly made from scratch, with Matt milling, mashing, fermenting, and distilling all on-site. They’re also one of the few Virginia distilleries using a custom-designed copper pot still specifically built for their facility, allowing for precise temperature control and consistent flavor profiles. Their approach to aging is equally methodical – they track detailed tasting notes for each barrel and only release spirits when they meet their standards, not when the marketing calendar demands it.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Watch Whiskey Being Made While You Taste It

You’ll walk into an industrial-chic space where the tasting bar sits directly adjacent to the production floor, separated only by glass. The smell of fermenting grain and copper stills creates an authentic distillery atmosphere without being overwhelming. Matt or Jess often lead tastings personally, explaining their processes while you can literally see the equipment they’re describing. Tastings typically include their current whiskey releases, gin, and whatever seasonal spirits they’re experimenting with. The space feels intimate – maybe a dozen people maximum – so you can ask detailed questions about mash bills, fermentation times, and aging processes. Don’t expect white tablecloths or fancy glassware; this is about the spirits and the craft, presented in a straightforward, educational way.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Real Spirit Nerds Absolutely Essential

If you’re genuinely interested in learning how spirits are made and want to taste products from people who can explain every decision that went into them, this is absolutely worth your time. The transparency and educational aspect make it ideal for serious spirits enthusiasts or anyone curious about the technical side of distilling. It’s not the place for large groups looking for a party atmosphere or people wanting elaborate food pairings. The spirits are solid and improving as they age, but you’re really coming for the experience of seeing craft distilling up close and learning from passionate producers. It’s particularly valuable if you want to understand the difference between true grain-to-glass operations and distilleries that source their spirits.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours and availability, as they sometimes adjust schedules around production needs. Parking can be tight on West Main Street, so arrive a few minutes early to find a spot. Ask Matt about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in the technical aspects – he keeps detailed notes on each barrel’s development. Try their gin even if you’re primarily a whiskey person; it showcases their distillation skills without the aging variables. Don’t rush through the tasting; the value here is in the conversation and education, not just sampling spirits. If they’re distilling during your visit, ask to see the process – it’s genuinely fascinating to watch.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Trial & Error Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Can I see the distillation process during my visit?
Yes, the entire production floor is visible through glass walls from the tasting room. If they’re actively distilling during your visit, you can watch the process in real-time and ask questions about what you’re seeing.
Do I need to make a reservation for tastings?
Reservations aren’t required, but calling ahead is recommended since they sometimes adjust hours around production schedules. The intimate space means they can only accommodate smaller groups at a time.
What’s the difference between their approach and other craft distilleries?
Trial & Error makes everything from grain to glass on-site, unlike distilleries that source neutral spirits and re-distill them. They also age their whiskeys based on taste rather than predetermined timelines, only releasing spirits when they meet their quality standards.
