ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Scottish Methods Meet Blue Ridge Mountains

Virginia Distillery Company sits on a 113-acre estate in Lovingston, Virginia, about 20 miles south of Charlottesville in Nelson County. George Moore and Gareth Moore founded the distillery in 2015, bringing together Virginia ingredients with Scotch whisky expertise. George spent years working in Scotland’s whisky industry, while Gareth handled the business side of launching what would become Virginia’s first whisky distillery focused on single malt production. They built their copper pot stills from Scotland and designed the facility to mirror Scottish distilling traditions while incorporating local Virginia elements. The Moore brothers’ vision centered on creating American single malt whisky using Scottish methods but Virginia ingredients – local barley, Blue Ridge Mountain water, and aging in Virginia’s climate. They partnered with Silverback Distillery initially and brought in master distiller Lovingston locals to help execute their plan. The 7,200-square-foot distillery building was designed with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, creating a space that feels more like a modern Scottish distillery than a typical American bourbon operation. Their approach combines traditional Scottish copper pot distillation with Virginia’s hot summers and cold winters for unique aging. Visitors get a full whisky education here, not just a quick tasting. You’ll see their Scottish-imported copper stills, learn about their malting process, and understand how Virginia’s climate affects aging differently than Scotland’s. The tasting room overlooks the production floor, so you’re watching whisky being made while you sample it. They focus heavily on education – explaining the differences between American single malt and Scotch, how terroir affects whisky, and why they chose this particular location in Virginia’s mountains.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Single Malt Whisky With Virginia Soul

Virginia Distillery Company is one of the few American distilleries producing single malt whisky using traditional Scottish methods with American ingredients and climate. Their copper pot stills were imported directly from Scotland, and their master distilling approach mirrors Scottish traditions while embracing Virginia’s dramatically different aging climate. What really sets them apart is their “marriage” technique – they blend their Virginia-made single malt with aged Scottish single malts to create unique expressions that bridge Old World and New World whisky making. The 113-acre estate provides their own water source from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and they’re working toward using Virginia-grown barley exclusively.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Copper Stills and Mountain Views

Tours take you through their complete production process, from mashing and fermentation to distillation in their gleaming copper pot stills imported from Scotland. The guides are genuinely knowledgeable about whisky production and Scottish techniques, not just reading scripts. You’ll smell the sweet mash, see the spirit flowing from the stills, and walk through barrel warehouses where Virginia’s heat and humidity work differently than Scottish aging. The tasting room has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, and tastings include both their Virginia-made expressions and their “married” whiskies that blend Virginia and Scottish components. The space feels modern and clean, more laboratory than rustic barn.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive From Charlottesville

If you’re curious about American single malt or how Scottish traditions translate to Virginia, absolutely. This isn’t your typical bourbon distillery experience – you’re getting education about a different category of whisky entirely. The setting is genuinely beautiful, and the Scottish connection adds authenticity you won’t find at most American whisky operations. However, if you’re strictly a bourbon person or looking for that rustic, heritage American whisky experience, this might feel too polished and international. Their whiskies are still young since they only started in 2015, so don’t expect decades-old expressions, but you can taste how Virginia’s climate is already affecting their spirits differently than Scottish ones.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours online in advance, especially on weekends – they limit group sizes to maintain the educational quality. The drive from Charlottesville takes about 30 minutes through winding mountain roads, so allow extra time and use GPS carefully. Ask specifically about their “marriage” process and how they select Scottish whiskies to blend with their Virginia production – it’s their most interesting technique. Try both their pure Virginia expressions and their married whiskies to understand the difference. If you’re visiting other Virginia wineries in the area, this makes a good contrast to understand how the same terroir affects different spirits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Virginia Distillery Co. — Visitor FAQ

What makes this different from bourbon distilleries?
Virginia Distillery Company makes single malt whisky using Scottish methods – copper pot stills, malted barley, and traditional fermentation – rather than the column stills and corn-based mash bills typical of bourbon. They focus on how Virginia’s climate affects Scottish-style whisky production.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, reservations are required for all tours and tastings. They limit group sizes to maintain educational quality, so booking online ahead of time is essential, especially on weekends.
What’s the marriage technique they use?
They blend their Virginia-distilled single malt with carefully selected Scottish single malts to create unique expressions. This allows them to offer complex whiskies while their own Virginia stock continues aging, and creates flavors impossible to achieve with purely Virginia or purely Scottish whisky.
