ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Industrial Craft Distilling From Engineers to Spirits

Vintage Spirits Distillery sits in Midvale, Utah, where founders Mike and Trent Christiansen turned their shared passion for craft spirits into a full-scale distillery operation in 2018. The brothers, who previously worked in construction and engineering respectively, started experimenting with distillation as a hobby before deciding to make it their livelihood. Their 4,000-square-foot facility houses custom copper stills and operates with a focus on small-batch production using locally-sourced grains when possible. The journey wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. Utah’s liquor laws meant navigating complex regulations, and the brothers spent nearly two years working through licensing requirements before they could open their doors to the public. Mike handles the production side while Trent manages operations, and they’ve built a reputation for meticulous attention to detail in their fermentation and distillation processes. They produce vodka, gin, and whiskey, with plans to expand their aged spirits portfolio as their whiskey inventory matures. The distillery offers a straightforward visitor experience centered around their production facility. You’ll see the grain-to-bottle process, learn about their equipment, and taste their current lineup in a no-frills tasting room that feels more like a working distillery than a polished tourist destination. It’s the kind of place where you might catch the distillers mid-production, and they’re usually happy to explain what they’re working on.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Custom Built Equipment Precision Meets Tradition

What sets Vintage Spirits apart is their engineering background bringing a technical precision to traditional distillation methods. The Christiansen brothers designed and built much of their own equipment, including custom fermentation tanks that allow for precise temperature control during the mashing process. They’re also working within Utah’s unique regulatory environment, which requires them to sell through state liquor stores while building a direct relationship with visitors through tastings and tours. Their approach focuses heavily on the science behind distillation, making it particularly interesting for visitors who want to understand the technical aspects of how spirits are made.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Production Floor Not a Tourist Show

Tours at Vintage Spirits feel like getting a behind-the-scenes look at a working production facility rather than a polished tourist experience. You’ll walk through their grain storage, milling, and fermentation areas while one of the founders or their small team explains each step of their process. The copper stills are the centerpiece, and you’ll learn about their specific approach to cuts and distillation runs. Tastings happen right in the production space, where you’ll sample their vodka, gin, and any available whiskey while surrounded by fermenting mash and aging barrels. The whole experience takes about 45 minutes and feels authentically focused on the craft rather than entertainment.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Technical Minds Real Craft Education

If you’re interested in the technical side of distillation and don’t mind a more industrial setting, Vintage Spirits offers genuine insight into small-scale craft distilling. It’s particularly appealing to home distillers, engineering types, or anyone who appreciates seeing how things are actually made. You won’t find elaborate cocktail programs or Instagram-worthy tasting rooms here, but you will get honest-to-goodness education about the distillation process from people who built their operation from scratch. The experience works well for spirits enthusiasts who want substance over style, though it might feel too utilitarian for visitors looking for a more polished or entertainment-focused experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule tours since they’re often in production and may not be available for walk-ins. The distillery can be a bit tricky to find in the industrial area, so double-check the GPS coordinates and look for their signage on the building. Weekday visits often provide more interaction with the actual distillers, while weekend tours might be more structured. Ask about their whiskey aging process if you’re interested in their long-term plans, and don’t miss trying their gin if you’re not typically a gin drinker – their botanical selection is particularly well-balanced. The space can get warm during summer production, so dress accordingly.
