ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

San Antonio's First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition Ended

Alamo Distilling Company sits in a converted warehouse on East Houston Street, bringing San Antonio its first legal distillery since Prohibition ended. Founded in 2017 by Michael Prochaska and John Wheeler, two guys who figured Texas needed more than just beer and margaritas. Prochaska, a former software engineer, and Wheeler, who worked in finance, started tinkering with home distillation before deciding to go legitimate. They spent two years navigating city permits and building out their 5,000-square-foot space, complete with a custom 500-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. The operation produces bourbon, vodka, and specialty spirits, all bottled on-site with a focus on Texas ingredients where possible. The tasting room feels industrial but comfortable, with exposed brick walls and plenty of space for groups. You’re not just visiting another craft distillery here—you’re seeing San Antonio’s modern distilling story get written in real time.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Texas Corn to Glass In a Converted Warehouse

This is San Antonio’s first legal distillery in nearly a century, which automatically makes it historically significant for the city. The location itself tells a story—they’re operating out of a renovated warehouse in the heart of San Antonio’s eastside, an area that’s been transforming from industrial to trendy. Their bourbon uses a mash bill that incorporates Texas-grown corn when available, and they’re one of the few distilleries in the region doing everything from grain to glass on-site. The founders didn’t come from distilling families or bourbon country—they’re local guys who learned the craft from scratch and brought it to a city better known for barbacoa than bourbon.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery First Tourist Attraction Second

Tours take you through their production floor where you can see the entire process, from mashing to bottling. The space feels authentic—it’s a working distillery first, tourist attraction second. You’ll smell the sweet corn mash and hear the still bubbling away during production days. The tasting room pours flights of their current lineup, and the staff knows the products well since it’s still a small operation. Weekend visits tend to be busier, but you’re not fighting crowds like at some bigger operations. The whole experience runs about 45 minutes to an hour if you do both tour and tasting.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Solid Stop if You're Already in Town

If you’re in San Antonio and interested in spirits, absolutely. This isn’t a destination distillery you’d plan a whole trip around, but it’s a solid stop if you’re already in town. The historical angle—being the city’s first legal distillery in decades—adds context that makes it more interesting than just another craft operation. Bourbon enthusiasts will appreciate seeing the full production process, and the prices are reasonable. Don’t expect the polished experience of bigger distilleries, but that’s part of the appeal. It feels genuine rather than manufactured for tourists.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before showing up—hours can be limited and they sometimes close for private events. Parking is available on-site, which is a blessing in that part of town. If you’re interested in seeing production in action, weekday visits are better since that’s when they’re usually running the still. The tasting room can get warm in summer since it’s not heavily air-conditioned, so dress accordingly. Ask about their barrel program if you’re a serious bourbon collector—they offer barrel picks for groups.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Alamo Distilling Company — Visitor FAQ

Is this really San Antonio’s first distillery since Prohibition?
Yes, Alamo Distilling is the first legal distillery to operate in San Antonio since Prohibition ended. The founders had to work through various city regulations to make it happen, which took about two years before they could start production.
Can you see the distillation process during tours?
You can see all the equipment and the production setup, but whether they’re actively distilling depends on when you visit. They typically run production during weekdays, so those visits have a better chance of seeing the still in action.
Do they use local Texas ingredients?
They source Texas corn when available and use local grain for their vodka production. Like most craft distilleries, availability of local ingredients can vary based on harvest and supply, but they prioritize Texas sources when possible.
