ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Roadside Operation That Makes Genuine Craft Spirits

Front Porch Distillery sits on Highway 59 just outside Nacogdoches, Texas, in what feels like genuine East Texas countryside. Founded by husband-and-wife team David and Tina Doherty in 2017, the operation grew from David’s passion for craft distilling that started as a home hobby. David, who previously worked in the oil and gas industry, decided to turn his weekend experiments into a full-scale business after friends kept asking where they could buy his spirits. The distillery opened its doors in 2019 in a purpose-built facility that captures the laid-back, front-porch vibe they wanted to create. The Dohertys designed their operation around small-batch production, focusing on bourbon, vodka, and moonshine that reflects East Texas character. David handles the distilling while Tina manages the business side and visitor experience. They use a combination of traditional methods and modern equipment, with a 500-gallon copper pot still as the centerpiece of their operation. The philosophy here is straightforward: make spirits they’d want to drink themselves, using quality ingredients and taking the time to do things right. Visitors find a relaxed atmosphere that lives up to the front porch name. The tasting room feels like you’re visiting friends rather than touring a corporate facility, with comfortable seating and windows overlooking the production area. You can watch the distilling process during tours, taste their spirits, and often chat directly with David about his methods. The scale is small enough that you get personal attention, but professional enough that the spirits are genuinely well-crafted.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain to Bottle On East Texas Highway

Front Porch’s appeal lies in its authentic small-town Texas approach to craft distilling. Unlike many distilleries that source their spirits, everything here is made on-site from grain to bottle. The Dohertys built their operation specifically to handle every step of production in-house, which is becoming increasingly rare in craft distilling. Their location on the outskirts of Nacogdoches gives them space to grow and age spirits properly while maintaining the intimate feel of a family operation. David’s background in engineering shows in the careful attention to technical details, while the overall vibe stays true to East Texas hospitality.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Small Town Welcome Real Distillery Feel

Tours here feel personal because they usually are—David or Tina often leads them personally. You’ll walk through the production area, see the mash tuns and fermentation tanks, and get up close with their copper still. The space smells like grain and oak, and you can usually hear something bubbling or distilling. Tours typically last 30-45 minutes and include tastings of their current lineup. The tasting room has a comfortable, lived-in feel with wooden tables and local touches. You’re encouraged to ask questions, and the answers come from people who actually make the spirits rather than reading from a script.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive For Personal Attention

If you’re looking for a genuine craft distillery experience without the crowds, Front Porch delivers. This isn’t a destination for people wanting elaborate facilities or extensive gift shops, but it’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who appreciate seeing the actual craft of distilling. The personal attention you get here is hard to find at larger operations, and the spirits are solid examples of small-batch Texas distilling. It’s particularly appealing if you want to support a true local business and enjoy talking with passionate distillers about their craft. The drive from Nacogdoches is easy, making it a good addition to East Texas road trips.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re open and to schedule a tour, as hours can vary depending on production schedules. The location on Highway 59 is easy to find with GPS, and there’s plenty of parking. Weekend visits tend to be more relaxed, but weekdays might give you a better chance to see active distilling. Ask David about his distilling process if he’s available—he’s genuinely passionate about the technical aspects and happy to share details. If you’re planning to buy bottles, they typically have their full lineup available on-site, often at better prices than you’ll find elsewhere.
