ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Texas Heat and Pioneer Spirit

Five Points Distilling operates out of a 10,000-square-foot facility in Forney, Texas, about 30 minutes east of Dallas. Founded by Chad Auler and Jeremy Pitts in 2015, the distillery produces Lone Elm Whiskey along with other craft spirits. Auler comes from a winemaking family—his parents own Fall Creek Vineyards—while Pitts brought business expertise to the partnership. They named their flagship whiskey after the historic Lone Elm tree that once served as a landmark for settlers traveling through Texas. The operation includes both production space and a tasting room where visitors can sample their spirits and learn about the distillation process. They focus on creating Texas-made whiskeys using locally sourced grains when possible, embracing the state’s growing craft spirits movement. The facility reflects their commitment to quality production with copper pot stills and careful attention to the aging process in the Texas heat.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Extreme Weather Accelerates Everything

Five Points Distilling stands out for its connection to Texas history through the Lone Elm brand, which pays homage to a legendary tree that guided pioneers across the prairie. The distillery benefits from Texas’s extreme temperature swings, which accelerate the aging process and create more interaction between whiskey and wood than you’d get in cooler climates. Their location in Forney puts them in the heart of North Texas grain country, allowing them to source ingredients locally. The founding partnership between a third-generation winemaker and a business strategist brings both agricultural heritage and modern operational expertise to their approach.

You can see the production equipment and aging barrels during visits, getting a sense of how Texas heat affects the whiskey-making process. The space feels more industrial than rustic, reflecting their focus on serious production over Instagram aesthetics. Staff members are typically happy to explain how they source grains and manage the aging process in the challenging Texas climate.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Education No Tourist Theater

If you’re interested in Texas whiskey or want to understand how climate affects aging, this is worth a stop. The historical connection to the Lone Elm story adds some regional flavor that whiskey enthusiasts appreciate. It’s not the most elaborate visitor experience you’ll find, but you get genuine insight into craft distilling without the tourist theater. Best suited for people who actually want to learn about whiskey production rather than just snap photos.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm tasting room hours and availability, as they sometimes adjust schedules for production needs. The facility can be a bit tricky to find in the industrial area, so double-check your GPS and look for the address numbers carefully. Ask about their aging process in Texas heat—it’s genuinely interesting compared to other climates. If you’re planning to buy bottles, check what they have available since some releases sell out quickly.
