ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Main Street Tennessee Distilling Done Right

Roaring River Distillery sits right on Main Street in Gainesboro, Tennessee, a small town nestled in the Upper Cumberland region where the Roaring River meets the Cumberland River. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jason and Angie Farmer in 2016, this craft distillery grew out of Jason’s passion for distilling that started as a hobby and evolved into something much bigger. The Farmers converted a historic downtown building into their production facility and tasting room, bringing legal distilling back to Jackson County for the first time in decades. They focus on small-batch bourbon, whiskey, and moonshine, all made with locally sourced ingredients when possible. The journey wasn’t simple—it took the Farmers several years to navigate Tennessee’s complex distilling regulations and secure the proper permits. Jason, who worked in construction before diving into distilling full-time, learned his craft through trial and error, countless batches, and studying traditional Tennessee methods. Angie handles much of the business side while Jason focuses on production. They’re deeply connected to the local community, sourcing corn from area farms and hiring locally. Their philosophy centers on patience and quality—they’re not trying to rush products to market but rather letting their spirits develop properly. Visitors get an intimate look at small-scale distilling in action. The operation is compact but efficient, with copper stills that Jason can walk you through personally if he’s around. The tasting room has a relaxed, hometown feel where you’re likely to chat with locals alongside tourists. You can sample their current offerings, learn about the distilling process, and pick up bottles to take home. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re discovering something special rather than hitting another tourist destination.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Legal Spirits Return After Decades Gone

What sets Roaring River apart is its genuine local connection and the fact that it brought legal distilling back to Jackson County after decades of absence. The Farmers didn’t come from big spirits backgrounds—they’re locals who saw an opportunity to create something meaningful in their hometown. Their small scale means Jason can oversee every batch personally, and they’re not trying to compete with large operations but rather create spirits that reflect their community. The location itself is distinctive—sitting right on Main Street in a small Tennessee river town, you’re getting an authentic slice of rural Tennessee distilling culture rather than a polished tourist experience.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Not the Marketing

The tasting room feels more like visiting friends than a formal distillery tour. You’ll likely meet Jason or Angie personally, and they’re happy to explain their process and the stories behind their spirits. The space is cozy and unpretentious, with the production area visible so you can see where everything happens. Tastings are relaxed affairs where you can sample their current lineup while learning about local distilling history. The atmosphere is genuinely welcoming—locals drop by regularly, and you might find yourself in conversations about everything from corn varieties to Cumberland River fishing.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Cumberland River Craft Worth Finding

This is perfect for spirits enthusiasts who appreciate authentic, small-scale operations over polished productions. You’re not getting elaborate tours or fancy amenities, but you are getting genuine interaction with the people making the spirits and insight into grassroots Tennessee distilling. It’s especially appealing if you’re exploring the Upper Cumberland region and want to support truly local businesses. Don’t expect bells and whistles—expect honest conversation, quality spirits, and the satisfaction of discovering something real. If you prefer larger operations with extensive facilities, this might feel too small-scale.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to make sure they’re open and someone’s available to chat—this is a small operation and hours can vary based on production schedules. Gainesboro is a small town, so the distillery is easy to find right on Main Street, with parking available nearby. Ask Jason about his distilling process if he’s there—he’s knowledgeable and passionate about the craft. Try their moonshine if you’re curious about traditional Tennessee spirits. Don’t rush your visit; the best part is the conversation and learning about their journey from hobby distillers to legitimate operation.
