ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Urban Distilling Where The Founders Pour

Gate 11 Distillery sits right in the heart of downtown Chattanooga at 1400 Market Street, tucked into a sleek urban space that feels more like a craft cocktail bar than a traditional distillery. Founded by Josh Christie and Nick Hartung, two friends who turned their shared obsession with quality spirits into a full-scale operation, Gate 11 opened its doors in 2017 after years of planning and navigating Tennessee’s distillery regulations. The name comes from their gate number during a memorable trip to Europe, where they first started seriously talking about leaving their corporate careers behind to make whiskey. Christie and Hartung didn’t just jump into distilling blind—they spent months learning from established distillers and perfecting their recipes before committing to the venture. What started as weekend experiments in Christie’s garage evolved into a legitimate operation with custom copper stills and a focus on small-batch bourbon and rye whiskey. The duo handles everything from mashing to bottling, keeping production small enough that they can personally oversee every step of the process. The distillery operates more like a tasting room with production happening behind glass, so you can watch the actual distilling process while sipping their spirits. The space has an industrial-modern vibe with exposed brick and steel, and the atmosphere stays relaxed even when it gets busy on weekends. You’re not getting the massive rickhouse tour experience here—instead, you get to meet the actual guys making the whiskey and taste spirits that are still finding their identity in the Tennessee market.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Watch Whiskey Being Made Through the Glass

Gate 11 stands out because it’s genuinely small-scale urban distilling where the founders are still hands-on with every batch. Christie and Hartung didn’t inherit this operation or buy into an established brand—they built it from scratch in downtown Chattanooga when the city’s craft distillery scene was basically nonexistent. Their location puts them right in the middle of the city’s revitalized downtown district, making them more accessible than rural distilleries that require a dedicated drive. The setup lets you watch active distillation through windows while you taste, which isn’t something you get at larger operations where production happens in separate facilities.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Guys Who Built This Thing

You’ll walk into what feels like an upscale cocktail bar with copper stills visible through large windows behind the bar. Christie or Hartung often handle tastings themselves, so you’re getting the story straight from the guys who designed the recipes and built the business. The tasting experience focuses on their core bourbon and rye offerings, with detailed explanations of their mash bills and aging process. The space stays intimate—maybe a dozen people max during busy periods—so you can actually have conversations and ask detailed questions about their production methods.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Downtown Chattanooga's Hidden Gem

If you’re interested in the business side of craft distilling or want to meet the actual founders, Gate 11 delivers that experience better than most places. You’ll get honest insights into what it takes to start a distillery from scratch and taste spirits that are still evolving as the operation matures. Don’t expect extensive tours or massive barrel warehouses—this is about meeting passionate entrepreneurs who are still figuring out their place in Tennessee’s whiskey landscape. It’s perfect for spirit enthusiasts who want to support local startups and taste products before they potentially scale up or get acquired.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting since hours can vary based on production schedules and private events. Parking downtown can be tricky during peak hours, but there are several paid lots within a block or two. Ask Christie or Hartung about their barrel aging philosophy—they’re experimenting with different char levels and aging environments, and they love talking through the technical details with genuinely interested visitors. Try their rye whiskey if it’s available; it showcases their approach better than their younger bourbon offerings.
