ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Farm That Makes Its Own Spirits

Blackfork Farms sits on a working farm in Brandt, South Dakota, where the Knutson family has been farming for generations. The distillery opened in 2016 when farmers Larry and Karla Knutson decided to add value to their grain crops by turning them into spirits. Their operation combines traditional farming with craft distillation, using grain grown right on their 3,000-acre farm to create vodka, gin, and whiskey. The distillery is housed in a converted farm building that maintains its agricultural roots while serving as a modern production facility and tasting room. The Knutsons weren’t looking to become distillers initially – they were looking for ways to diversify their farming operation and create additional revenue streams from their grain production. Larry had been farming the land for decades, growing corn, wheat, and other grains, when the idea of distillation emerged as a natural extension of their agricultural expertise. They invested in copper stills and learned the craft of distillation, applying the same attention to detail they’d used in farming for years. The family approach means everyone pitches in, from grain production through bottling and marketing. Visitors get a genuine farm-to-bottle experience here, seeing the entire process from the grain fields visible outside the windows to the finished spirits in the tasting room. The atmosphere is unpretentious and educational, with the Knutsons often personally conducting tours and tastings. You’re not just visiting a distillery – you’re visiting a working farm where the raw materials are grown, harvested, and transformed on-site. The operation stays true to its agricultural roots while producing quality spirits that reflect the terroir of South Dakota farmland.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain Fields Visible From the Tasting Room

True farm-to-bottle production sets Blackfork Farms apart from most craft distilleries. The Knutsons grow their own corn, wheat, and other grains on their 3,000-acre farm, controlling every step from soil to spirit. This isn’t just marketing – you can literally see the grain fields from the tasting room windows. The family’s multi-generational farming expertise brings a different perspective to distillation, treating it as an extension of agriculture rather than a separate craft. Their location in rural South Dakota means they’re working with different terroir than most whiskey regions, and their farming-first approach influences everything from grain selection to seasonal production schedules.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Farm Tour Meets Distillery Experience

Tours at Blackfork Farms feel more like visiting friends on their farm than a commercial distillery experience. The Knutsons often personally lead visitors through their operation, explaining both the farming and distillation processes with the knowledge that comes from doing both for years. You’ll see their copper stills, learn about their grain-to-glass process, and often get to look out at the actual fields where the grain is grown. The tasting room has a comfortable, farmhouse feel where you can sample their spirits while learning about the agricultural side of production. The scale is intimate – this isn’t a high-volume operation, so you get personal attention and can ask detailed questions about both farming and distillation.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Agriculture Worth the Drive

If you’re interested in agricultural spirits and want to understand the farm-to-bottle process, Blackfork Farms offers something you won’t find at most distilleries. The combination of working farm and craft distillery creates an educational experience that goes beyond typical distillery tours. It’s particularly appealing if you appreciate the agricultural side of spirits production or want to support family farming operations. However, if you’re expecting a polished commercial experience or extensive cocktail offerings, this might feel too rural and simple. The value is in the authenticity and the rare chance to see true grain-to-glass production where the grain fields are literally outside the door.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since this is a working farm operation and hours can vary with agricultural schedules. The rural location means GPS might not be perfectly accurate, so get specific directions when you call. Ask about seasonal variations in the tour – harvest time offers a different perspective than other seasons, and you might catch grain processing in action. The Knutsons are knowledgeable about both farming and distillation, so don’t hesitate to ask questions about the agricultural side of their operation. Bring cash for purchases since payment options might be limited compared to larger commercial operations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Blackfork Farms – Farm Distillery & Tasting Room — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow all your own grain on the farm?
Yes, the Knutsons grow corn, wheat, and other grains on their 3,000-acre farm that they use for distillation. This true farm-to-bottle operation means you can see the grain fields from the tasting room windows. It’s not just marketing – they’ve been farming this land for generations before adding distillation.
Should I call before visiting?
Definitely call ahead since this is a working farm operation with schedules that can vary seasonally. Agricultural work takes priority, so hours aren’t always predictable like a traditional retail operation. Calling ensures someone will be available to give you the full farm and distillery experience.
What’s the difference between visiting during harvest season versus other times?
Harvest season offers the most complete experience since you might see grain processing in action and understand how fresh harvest affects their production planning. Other seasons focus more on the distillation process itself, but you’ll always see the connection between the fields and the spirits since the farm operations continue year-round.
