Blackfork Farms sits on a working farm in Brandt, South Dakota, where the Knutson family has been farming for generations. The distillery opened in 2016 when farmers Larry and Karla Knutson decided to add value to their grain crops by turning them into spirits. Their operation combines traditional farming with craft distillation, using grain grown right on their 3,000-acre farm to create vodka, gin, and whiskey. The distillery is housed in a converted farm building that maintains its agricultural roots while serving as a modern production facility and tasting room.
The Knutsons weren’t looking to become distillers initially – they were looking for ways to diversify their farming operation and create additional revenue streams from their grain production. Larry had been farming the land for decades, growing corn, wheat, and other grains, when the idea of distillation emerged as a natural extension of their agricultural expertise. They invested in copper stills and learned the craft of distillation, applying the same attention to detail they’d used in farming for years. The family approach means everyone pitches in, from grain production through bottling and marketing.
Visitors get a genuine farm-to-bottle experience here, seeing the entire process from the grain fields visible outside the windows to the finished spirits in the tasting room. The atmosphere is unpretentious and educational, with the Knutsons often personally conducting tours and tastings. You’re not just visiting a distillery – you’re visiting a working farm where the raw materials are grown, harvested, and transformed on-site. The operation stays true to its agricultural roots while producing quality spirits that reflect the terroir of South Dakota farmland.
