ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Where Sweet Tea Meets Copper Pot Stills

Firefly Distillery sits on Wadmalaw Island, about 30 minutes south of Charleston, where Jim Irvin and Scott Newitt launched South Carolina’s first legal moonshine operation in 2008. These two friends started with a simple mission: create authentic sweet tea vodka using actual tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation right down the road. What began as weekend experiments in Irvin’s garage has grown into a 13,000-square-foot facility that produces everything from their famous Sweet Tea Vodka to bourbon and rum. The distillery operates out of a modern industrial building that houses their copper pot stills and bottling operation, plus a tasting room where visitors can sample the full lineup of spirits that put South Carolina back on the distilling map after decades of prohibition. Irvin and Newitt didn’t come from distilling backgrounds—Irvin worked in real estate while Newitt was in construction—but they shared a love for quality spirits and saw an opportunity to create something uniquely Southern. They spent two years navigating South Carolina’s complex liquor laws, becoming pioneers who helped pave the way for the state’s craft distilling renaissance. Master Distiller Scott Blackwell joined the team early on, bringing technical expertise to complement the founders’ entrepreneurial vision. Their approach centers on using local ingredients whenever possible, from that famous Charleston Tea Plantation tea to South Carolina-grown corn and sweet potatoes. Visitors get an authentic behind-the-scenes look at a working distillery that’s still very much a hands-on operation. You’ll see the 500-gallon copper pot stills in action, learn about their unique sweet tea infusion process, and understand how they’ve scaled from garage startup to regional distribution while maintaining their small-batch approach. The tasting room feels more like a neighborhood bar than a corporate facility, with Firefly’s team genuinely excited to share their story and let you taste through spirits that range from their signature Sweet Tea Vodka to aged bourbon and experimental seasonal releases.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

America's Only Tea Plantation Makes Their Vodka

Firefly pioneered sweet tea vodka by partnering with the Charleston Tea Plantation—the only commercial tea farm in North America—to create an authentic Southern spirit that tastes like actual sweet tea rather than artificial flavoring. They’re also South Carolina’s first legal distillery since Prohibition, making them true pioneers who helped establish the legal framework that other craft distilleries in the state now follow. Their location on Wadmalaw Island puts them in the heart of Lowcountry agriculture, allowing them to source ingredients like sweet potatoes and corn locally, while their small-batch approach means they can experiment with seasonal releases and limited editions that larger operations can’t accommodate.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery First Tourist Trap Never

Tours take you through their production facility where you can see the copper pot stills working and learn about their unique tea-infusion process that takes several days to get right. The guides are often the actual production team members who made the spirits you’re tasting, so you’re getting insider knowledge about batch variations and production challenges rather than a scripted presentation. The tasting room has a laid-back vibe with exposed industrial elements and casual seating where you’ll sample their core lineup plus any seasonal releases they have available. You can smell the sweet tea infusion happening, see bottles being hand-labeled, and get a real sense of how a craft operation runs day-to-day.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

The Drive to Wadmalaw Pays Real Dividends

This is perfect for anyone curious about craft distilling or interested in uniquely Southern spirits, especially if you’ve never tasted real sweet tea vodka made with actual tea leaves. It’s not the most polished tourist experience—this is a working distillery first, visitor attraction second—but that authenticity appeals to spirits enthusiasts who want to see the real deal rather than a slick presentation. The drive to Wadmalaw Island is scenic and you can easily combine it with visits to other local attractions like the Charleston Tea Plantation. If you’re expecting a Kentucky bourbon trail-style operation with grand facilities and elaborate tours, you might be disappointed, but if you want to meet the people actually making innovative Southern spirits, this delivers.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting since tour schedules can change based on production needs. The drive to Wadmalaw Island takes longer than you’d expect from Charleston—plan for 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and don’t rely solely on GPS since some mapping apps take you the long way. Ask specifically about their seasonal releases since they often have limited editions available only at the distillery that don’t make it to retail distribution. If you’re visiting other Wadmalaw Island attractions like the tea plantation, plan your timing since both have limited hours and you don’t want to make the drive twice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Firefly Distillery — Visitor FAQ

How is your Sweet Tea Vodka different from other flavored vodkas?
We actually infuse our vodka with real tea leaves from the Charleston Tea Plantation rather than using artificial flavoring or extracts. The process takes several days to get the right balance of tea flavor without bitterness, creating a spirit that tastes like authentic Southern sweet tea.
How long does a typical visit take?
Most visitors spend about an hour at the distillery, including a tour of the production facility and tasting in our tasting room. If you’re really interested in the process and want to chat with our team about distilling, you could easily spend longer.
Can you buy spirits that aren’t available in stores?
Yes, we often have limited releases and seasonal spirits available only at the distillery that don’t make it to retail distribution. It’s worth asking what distillery-exclusive products we have when you visit since these change regularly based on what we’re experimenting with.
