ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Converted Dairy Barn That Makes Real Whiskey

Hungry Run Distillery sits on 10 Ridens Road in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, housed in a converted barn that feels like it’s been part of the Mifflin County landscape forever. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jim and Pam Kerstetter, this small-batch operation opened its doors in 2018 after Jim spent years perfecting his craft in their garage. The couple transformed a century-old dairy barn into their production facility and tasting room, keeping the rustic charm while installing modern distilling equipment. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and flavored moonshines that reflect their commitment to traditional Pennsylvania distilling methods. Jim’s journey into distilling started as a retirement hobby after decades in manufacturing, but his attention to detail and Pam’s business acumen turned their passion project into a legitimate craft distillery. They source their grains locally when possible and use a 500-gallon copper still that Jim helped design. The name ‘Hungry Run’ comes from a small creek that runs through their property—a nod to the local geography that shaped this corner of central Pennsylvania. Their approach is hands-on and personal, with Jim often leading tours himself and explaining his fermentation process to visitors. Visitors find themselves in an authentic working distillery where you can see the entire process from grain to bottle. The tasting room maintains the barn’s original character with exposed beams and stone walls, while large windows let you peer directly into the production area. It’s not fancy or polished, but that’s exactly the point—this is craft distilling at its most genuine, where you’re tasting spirits made by the same people pouring your samples.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Pennsylvania's Smallest Scale Big on Character

Hungry Run operates on a scale that’s genuinely small—their 500-gallon still produces maybe 30-40 barrels per year, making this one of Pennsylvania’s smallest commercial distilleries. The Kerstetters didn’t come from the spirits industry, which gives their operation an authentically experimental feel that you don’t find at more polished facilities. Jim’s background in manufacturing shows in his methodical approach to fermentation and aging, and he’s not afraid to share mistakes alongside successes. The converted dairy barn setting isn’t a marketing gimmick—it’s actually their old barn, complete with the quirks and character that come with adapting agricultural buildings for distilling.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Polish Required Just Pure Craft

You’ll likely meet Jim or Pam personally during your visit, since they handle most tours and tastings themselves. The tour takes you through the grain room, past the mash tun, and around their copper still while Jim explains each step in detail—he genuinely enjoys talking about the science behind fermentation. The tasting happens at a simple bar setup where you can sample their current offerings while looking directly into the production area. Don’t expect elaborate cocktails or food pairings; this is about tasting the spirits neat or with a splash of water while learning about small-batch distilling from people who are still figuring some of it out themselves.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Over Everything Worth the Drive

If you’re looking for a polished distillery experience with professional tour guides and elaborate gift shops, this isn’t it. But if you want to see authentic craft distilling in action and meet the actual people making the spirits, Hungry Run delivers something you can’t get at larger operations. It appeals most to spirits enthusiasts who appreciate the craft behind the bottle and don’t mind a more informal, educational experience. You’re essentially visiting someone’s passionate hobby that grew into a business, complete with the personal touches and rough edges that come with that territory.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting—their hours can be irregular since Jim and Pam run everything themselves. The barn can get chilly in winter, so dress accordingly. GPS should get you there fine, but you’re looking for a converted barn on a rural road, not a flashy distillery sign. Ask Jim about his fermentation experiments if you’re interested in the technical side—he loves diving into the details. Don’t expect a huge selection of aged spirits since they’re still relatively new, but their younger whiskeys and flavored spirits show promise.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hungry Run Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation?
Yes, definitely call ahead since Jim and Pam run everything themselves and hours can vary based on production schedules. They prefer to give each visitor group personal attention rather than rush through multiple tours.
What spirits are available to taste?
Their selection varies based on what’s ready, but typically includes flavored moonshines and younger whiskey expressions. Since they’re still aging their bourbon and rye, don’t expect a full lineup of aged spirits yet.
Is this suitable for beginners or just serious whiskey drinkers?
Jim enjoys teaching anyone about distilling, regardless of experience level. He explains everything in accessible terms and doesn’t assume prior knowledge, making it great for curious beginners.
