ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Warehouse Lab Where Brothers Make Magic

451 Spirits sits in a converted warehouse space on Oakland Park Avenue in Columbus, where founders Brian Nolan and Jeff Nolan (brothers, not coincidentally) turned their shared obsession with craft spirits into Ohio’s most interesting small-batch operation. The name comes from Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel—a nod to their belief that good spirits should spark conversation and challenge the status quo. Since opening in 2019, they’ve been making vodka, gin, and rum in small batches using custom copper stills, with plans to age whiskey that won’t be ready for years. The 3,000-square-foot facility doubles as tasting room and production space, where you can watch them work while sampling their current lineup. Brian handles the distilling side after years in brewing, while Jeff manages the business operations, and together they’ve created something that feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a tourist destination.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Rum and Gin Done Seriously Right

Most craft distilleries stick to whiskey or vodka, but 451 Spirits deliberately chose to focus on the spirits that bigger operations often phone in. Their gin uses a vapor basket infusion method that creates incredibly clean botanical separation, and their rum program sources molasses from small sugar producers rather than industrial suppliers. The brothers also run everything through their custom-built reflux column still, which lets them control congener levels with scientific precision. They’re one of the few Ohio distilleries doing rum seriously, and their approach treats each spirit category like it deserves the same attention whiskey gets elsewhere.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

More Garage Hangout Than Tourist Stop

The tasting room feels more like hanging out in someone’s well-stocked garage than a formal spirits experience. Brian or Jeff usually handle tastings themselves, walking you through their production philosophy while pouring samples of whatever they’ve got ready. The space is small enough that you can see the stills and fermentation tanks from the bar, and they’re happy to explain what they’re working on or let you smell whatever’s coming off the still that day. Tastings run about 45 minutes and include their core lineup plus whatever experimental batches they want feedback on. The vibe is relaxed and educational without being preachy—they genuinely want to know what you think.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Hidden Gem Status While It Lasts

If you’re looking for polished tours and gift shops, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to taste genuinely interesting spirits and talk shop with people who geek out about distillation, 451 delivers. Their gin stands up against anything coming out of bigger operations, and the rum program shows real promise. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to discover something before everyone else catches on, or anyone curious about the technical side of distilling. Groups larger than six might feel cramped, and whiskey purists will have to wait a few more years for their aged stuff to be ready.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead rather than just showing up—they’re often running production and can’t always accommodate walk-ins. Ask specifically about trying their barrel-aged gin if they’ve got any ready, and don’t skip the rum even if you think you don’t like rum. Brian loves talking about the science behind their processes, so come with questions if you’re curious about the technical stuff. Parking is easy in their small lot, and the location is straightforward to find. Weekend afternoons tend to be less busy than evenings if you want more one-on-one time with the founders.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

451 Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do you make whiskey?
They’ve got whiskey aging in barrels but it won’t be ready for a few more years. Right now they focus on vodka, gin, and rum, which lets them perfect their distillation techniques before moving into aged spirits. The wait will be worth it based on what they’re doing with their current lineup.
Can I just drop by for a tasting?
It’s better to call ahead since they’re often running production and might not be available for walk-ins. They’re a small operation with the founders handling most tastings personally, so a quick phone call saves everyone time and ensures you get their full attention.
What makes your rum different from other craft distilleries?
They source molasses from small sugar producers rather than industrial suppliers, and they’re one of the few Ohio distilleries taking rum seriously as a category. Most craft operations treat rum as an afterthought, but 451 applies the same attention to detail they use for their gin and vodka.
