ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Industrial Workshop Where Bourbon Gets Made

River Roots Barrel Company sits in Cleveland’s West Side at 3236 W 121st Street, founded by Michael and Tammy Karpinski who opened their doors in 2019. The husband-and-wife team transformed a modest industrial unit into a craft distillery after Michael’s career in manufacturing sparked his interest in the precision of distillation. They started with a 26-gallon copper still from Hillbilly Stills and have been methodically building their operation around small-batch bourbon and rye production. The 2,000-square-foot space houses their production equipment, a small tasting area, and barrel storage where they age their spirits in 15-gallon barrels for faster maturation. Michael handles the distillation while Tammy manages the business side, and they’ve built their reputation on being hands-on with every batch. They source their grain from Ohio farms when possible and focus on traditional mash bills with their own tweaks. The name “River Roots” reflects their connection to Cleveland’s industrial heritage along Lake Erie, and they’ve embraced being part of Ohio’s growing craft distilling scene. What started as weekend experimentation turned into a full-time operation when Michael retired early to focus on perfecting their recipes. Visitors find a no-frills operation where you’re likely to meet the owners themselves during tastings or tours. The atmosphere is more workshop than polished visitor center, which appeals to people who want to see actual production rather than a sanitized experience. They’ve been building a following among local bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate their experimental approach and willingness to try unusual mash bills. The small scale means limited availability, but that’s part of the appeal for collectors looking for something you can’t find everywhere.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Fifteen-Gallon Barrels Mean Faster Aging Magic

River Roots stands out for their use of 15-gallon barrels instead of the standard 53-gallon cooperage, which accelerates aging and creates more wood contact per gallon of whiskey. This means their spirits develop complexity faster, allowing them to release aged products sooner than traditional distilleries. Michael’s manufacturing background shows in their precise approach to cuts and consistent mash fermentation, and they’re not afraid to experiment with unusual grain bills including higher wheat content bourbons and spiced ryes. Being one of the few true grain-to-glass operations on Cleveland’s West Side, they’ve carved out a niche serving the local craft spirits community while building relationships with Ohio farmers for grain sourcing.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Frills Operation With Real Character

You’ll walk into what feels like an active workshop where Michael or Tammy will personally guide you through their operation, explaining their small-batch process from grain to bottle. The space smells like fermenting mash and aging wood, with barrels stacked along the walls and their copper still taking center stage. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup where you can sample their current releases while learning about their approach to different mash bills and aging techniques. The experience is intimate and educational rather than flashy, with plenty of opportunity to ask detailed questions about their process and philosophy.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Cleveland Craft Worth the Drive

This is perfect for serious whiskey enthusiasts who want to understand small-scale distilling and meet the people behind the bottles. You’ll get personal attention from the owners and insight into the craft that you won’t find at larger operations. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive gift shops, but do expect genuine passion and unique spirits you can’t find elsewhere. It’s ideal for people who prefer authenticity over polish and want to support local craft distilling. If you’re looking for a polished tourist experience with big production tours, you might want to look elsewhere.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting since hours can vary with production schedules and they’re often at local events. They’re located in an industrial area, so use GPS and look for the address rather than trying to spot signage. Saturday afternoons tend to be the best time to catch both Michael and Tammy there together. Ask about their current experiments and barrel samples if you’re interested in their process development. They often have limited releases that aren’t widely advertised, so inquire about what’s new or coming soon.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

River Roots Barrel Company — Visitor FAQ

Do you offer regular public tours and tastings?
Tours and tastings are available but it’s best to call ahead since schedules can vary with production needs. Michael and Tammy prefer to give personal attention rather than run set tour times, so they’ll work with your schedule when possible.
What makes your whiskey different from larger distilleries?
They use 15-gallon barrels instead of standard 53-gallon ones, which speeds aging and creates more wood contact per gallon. This means their spirits develop complexity faster while maintaining the craft scale that allows for experimentation with different mash bills.
Can you buy bottles directly at the distillery?
Yes, they sell bottles on-site including limited releases that might not be available elsewhere. Selection varies based on what they have aging and bottled, so it’s worth asking about current availability and upcoming releases.
