ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Downtown Wilmington's First Modern Craft Distillery

End of Days Distillery sits in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, founded by husband-and-wife team Matt and Amy Cunningham who opened their doors in 2016. The couple transformed a former auto repair shop on Castle Street into a 3,000-square-foot distillery and tasting room, complete with exposed brick walls and industrial touches that nod to the building’s past. Matt handles the distilling operations while Amy manages the business side, and together they’ve built something that feels authentically Wilmington—unpretentious, welcoming, and focused on quality over flash. They produce vodka, gin, rum, and whiskey using a 250-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. The Cunninghams didn’t come from the spirits industry—Matt worked in construction and Amy in marketing—but they shared a fascination with the science and craft of distillation. After years of home experimentation and research, they decided to take the leap into commercial production. The name ‘End of Days’ reflects their philosophy that life’s too short not to pursue your passions, and every bottle should be worth savoring. They’ve weathered the typical startup challenges of a small distillery, from navigating local regulations to building distribution, but their focus has remained on creating spirits that represent their vision of what good craft distilling should be. Visitors find a relaxed, authentic experience that’s more about education and genuine hospitality than flashy marketing. The tasting room feels like hanging out with friends who happen to make excellent spirits, and the Cunninghams or their small team are usually around to talk process, ingredients, or just chat about Wilmington. You’re tasting spirits made a few feet away, and that connection between production and product is what makes the experience memorable. It’s craft distilling at human scale.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

From Auto Shop To Artisan Spirits

End of Days operates as one of Wilmington’s first craft distilleries in the modern era, helping establish the city’s craft spirits scene from scratch. The Cunninghams focus on small-batch production with their single 250-gallon still, which means limited quantities but hands-on attention to every batch. Their approach emphasizes traditional techniques without the pretension—they’re not trying to reinvent distilling, just do it really well. The downtown location puts them in the heart of Wilmington’s revitalized Castle Street area, making them part of the city’s broader renaissance. What sets them apart is their genuine commitment to education and transparency; they’ll walk you through their process, show you the equipment, and explain their choices without the usual craft distillery mystique.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Tourist Scripts Just Real Talk

You’ll walk into a space that feels like an industrial workshop that’s been made comfortable—exposed brick, concrete floors, and the gleaming copper still as the centerpiece. The tasting room area has a relaxed bar setup where you can sample their spirits while watching the distilling operation. Tours are informal and personal, usually led by Matt or Amy themselves, who’ll explain their grain-to-glass process and let you see, smell, and touch ingredients. Tastings include their core lineup with detailed explanations of flavor profiles and production methods. The atmosphere is conversational rather than scripted, and you’ll likely learn as much about starting a small business as you will about distilling.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Small Batch Done Exactly Right

This is perfect for spirits enthusiasts who prefer authentic craft experiences over polished tourist attractions. If you want to understand what small-batch distilling actually looks like and taste spirits made with real care, End of Days delivers that in spades. You won’t find elaborate gift shops or themed experiences, but you will find genuinely good spirits and people passionate about their craft. It’s particularly appealing if you’re exploring Wilmington’s downtown area and want to support a local business that’s contributing to the city’s character. Don’t expect a big production—this is intimate, educational, and focused on quality.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours and availability, as they’re a small operation and schedules can vary. Parking is street parking in downtown Wilmington, so factor in a short walk. The best time to visit is when Matt or Amy can personally give you the tour—ask when you call if one of the founders will be there. Don’t rush the experience; they’re happy to talk details if you’re genuinely interested in distilling. Try their gin if you’re typically a whiskey person—it might surprise you. The location is walkable to other downtown Wilmington attractions, so plan it as part of a broader downtown exploration.
