ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Where Rum Running History Meets Modern Craft

Outer Banks Distilling sits in downtown Manteo on Roanoke Island, where the Wright Brothers first took flight and the Lost Colony mystery still captures imaginations. Founded in 2014 by Kelly Bray, a former pharmaceutical executive who traded sterile labs for copper stills, this craft distillery occupies a renovated building that’s become a cornerstone of Manteo’s revitalized waterfront district. They produce rum, vodka, and gin using traditional methods in small batches, with their flagship Kill Devil Rum paying homage to the area’s maritime heritage. Bray’s journey from Big Pharma to craft spirits wasn’t accidental. After years in corporate America, he wanted to create something tangible that connected to the Outer Banks’ rich history of rum running and coastal trading. The distillery’s name references both the geographic location and the colorful past of barrier island bootleggers. Working with a small team, Bray focused on creating spirits that reflect the coastal character – clean, approachable, and rooted in local tradition. The operation runs on a 500-gallon copper pot still, keeping production intentionally small to maintain quality control. Visitors step into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grain mingles with salt air from the nearby sound. The tasting room feels like a neighborhood bar where locals and tourists mix easily, and Bray or his team often lead informal tours explaining everything from mash bills to the challenges of distilling in a humid coastal environment. It’s not fancy, but it’s authentic – the kind of place where you learn something new about both spirits and local history while enjoying a well-made cocktail.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

North Carolina's First Legal Rum Since Prohibition

This is one of North Carolina’s first legal rum distilleries since Prohibition, operating in a region historically known for rum running and maritime trade. The coastal location creates unique aging conditions – the constant humidity and salt air influence how spirits mature in barrels, creating flavor profiles you won’t find inland. Bray sources local ingredients when possible and names his spirits after local landmarks and legends, like Kill Devil Rum, which references both Kill Devil Hills and the old sailor’s term for strong rum. The distillery also embraces its location’s aviation history, with nods to the Wright Brothers throughout the facility.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Salt Air and Copper Stills In Downtown Manteo

You’ll walk into a compact operation where the still, fermentation tanks, and tasting bar share the same space, creating an intimate atmosphere where production and hospitality blend naturally. Tours are usually led by Kelly Bray himself or longtime staff members who know every detail of the process, from grain selection to bottling. You can watch the distillation process while sipping cocktails made with their spirits, and the staff genuinely enjoys explaining how coastal conditions affect their aging process.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Coastal Distilling Without the Tourist Trap

If you’re interested in craft spirits and appreciate authentic, small-scale operations, this is definitely worth your time. It’s particularly appealing to visitors who want to understand the connection between place and product – how the Outer Banks environment influences the spirits. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or polished presentations; this is a working distillery first, tourist attraction second. The experience is educational and relaxed rather than flashy, making it perfect for spirits enthusiasts who value substance over spectacle. It also pairs well with exploring historic Manteo and the surrounding attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page for current hours, as they sometimes adjust for production schedules or seasonal changes. Parking can be limited in downtown Manteo during peak tourist season, so plan to walk a few blocks if necessary. Ask about their aging experiments and how coastal humidity affects their barrels – it’s genuinely fascinating. Try their cocktails to see how their spirits perform in mixed drinks, not just neat pours. If you’re visiting multiple Outer Banks attractions, this makes a good stop between the Wright Brothers Memorial and the waterfront, as it’s centrally located in Manteo.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Outer Banks Distilling — Visitor FAQ

What makes Outer Banks rum different from other American rums?
The coastal location creates unique aging conditions with constant humidity and salt air that influence how the spirits develop in barrels. This gives their rum characteristics you won’t find in spirits aged inland, with a distinctive coastal influence on the flavor profile.
Can you tour the distillery without an appointment?
Yes, they typically welcome walk-ins during regular hours, though calling ahead is recommended to ensure someone’s available to give you the full tour. Production schedules sometimes affect availability, so a quick call can save you disappointment.
Is this related to the historical rum running in the Outer Banks?
While not directly connected to Prohibition-era operations, the distillery deliberately honors that maritime heritage through their naming and location. They’re one of the first legal rum distilleries in the area since Prohibition, bringing rum production back to a region historically known for it.
