Great Wagon Road Distilling Company sits in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood at 610 Anderson Street, occupying a converted warehouse space that fits right into this artsy district known for its galleries and craft breweries. Founded in 2013 by Olde Mecklenburg Brewery veterans John Marrino and Brewmaster Chip Morrison, along with distilling consultant Rob Cassell, the operation represents Charlotte’s entry into the craft spirits movement. They opened their doors in 2016 after navigating the complex process of bringing distilling back to Charlotte for the first time since Prohibition.
Marrino and Morrison brought their beer-making expertise to spirits, but had to learn distilling from scratch. They brought in Cassell, who had consulting experience with other craft distilleries, to help design their production setup and develop recipes. The team focused on creating a neighborhood gathering spot that would complement NoDa’s existing craft beverage scene. Their 1,500-square-foot facility houses a custom 500-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same Kentucky company that builds stills for many major bourbon distilleries.
You’ll find them producing bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits in small batches, with most of their whiskey aging in 15-gallon barrels to speed up the maturation process. The tasting room has a relaxed, industrial feel with exposed brick walls and local artwork, designed to feel more like a neighborhood bar than a formal distillery tour destination. They’ve built a solid local following by focusing on approachable spirits and creating a space where people want to hang out rather than just sample and leave.
