ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Coastal Carolina Craft Made by Engineers

Bogue Sound Distillery sits on Bogue Commercial Drive in the small coastal town of Bogue, North Carolina, part of the Crystal Coast region. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mark and Kim Hewitt, this craft distillery opened in 2016 after the couple left their corporate careers to pursue their passion for creating premium spirits. The distillery operates out of a 3,000-square-foot facility that houses their custom-built copper still and barrel aging room, focusing on small-batch bourbon, rum, and moonshine production. The Hewitts’ journey into distilling began during a vacation to Kentucky’s bourbon country, where they became fascinated with the craft and science behind spirit production. Mark, a former engineer, spent two years researching and planning before they made the leap. They worked closely with local officials to become one of the first legal distilleries in Carteret County, navigating complex regulations to bring craft spirits to the Crystal Coast. Kim handles the business operations while Mark focuses on production, using traditional methods combined with his engineering precision. Visitors to Bogue Sound get an intimate look at small-batch distilling in action. The operation produces around 200 cases per month, with everything from mashing to bottling happening on-site. The tasting room maintains a relaxed, coastal vibe that reflects the local culture, and the Hewitts often personally conduct tours and tastings. You can watch the entire process from grain to glass, and the couple’s enthusiasm for their craft comes through in every interaction.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Ocean Air Aging Changes Everything

Bogue Sound stands out as one of the few legal distilleries operating in coastal North Carolina, bringing craft spirits to a region better known for seafood than bourbon. Their location just miles from the Atlantic Ocean influences their aging process, with the coastal humidity and temperature swings creating unique maturation conditions for their barrels. Mark Hewitt’s engineering background shows in his meticulous attention to detail and data-driven approach to production, tracking everything from fermentation temperatures to aging conditions. The distillery also incorporates local elements when possible, including using North Carolina corn and working with regional suppliers, giving their spirits a distinctly coastal Carolina character.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers In Their Element

Tours at Bogue Sound are personal affairs, usually led by Mark or Kim Hewitt themselves, giving you direct access to the founders’ knowledge and passion. You’ll walk through their compact but efficient production facility, seeing the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and their gleaming copper still up close. The aroma of fermenting grain and aging spirits fills the space, and Mark enjoys explaining the science behind each step of the process. Tastings happen in their cozy tasting room, where you can sample their current lineup while hearing stories about the challenges and triumphs of starting a distillery from scratch. The atmosphere is conversational and educational rather than flashy.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Story Worth the Drive

If you’re interested in craft spirits and enjoy meeting passionate entrepreneurs, Bogue Sound delivers an authentic small-distillery experience. This isn’t a polished tourist destination with elaborate facilities, but rather a working distillery where you get genuine insight into the craft. The personal attention from the founders makes it special for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the process and business side of distilling. Casual tourists might find it less impressive than larger operations, but anyone who appreciates small-batch craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit will find value here. The coastal location also makes it a nice addition to a Crystal Coast vacation.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule tours and tastings, as this is a small operation that can’t always accommodate walk-ins. The distillery is located on a commercial drive that’s easy to miss, so use GPS carefully and look for the modest signage. Weekdays often offer the best chance to see production in action and spend more time with the Hewitts. Ask Mark about his engineering approach to distilling and the challenges of aging spirits in coastal conditions. If you’re planning other Crystal Coast activities, Bogue Sound works well as part of a day exploring the area, but don’t expect to spend more than an hour here unless you’re deeply into distilling discussions.
