ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Small Batch Dreams On Carolina Countryside

Loping Crow Distillery sits on 24 acres of countryside in Albemarle, North Carolina, founded by husband-and-wife team John and Christy Ward in 2019. The Wards transformed a former agricultural property into a working distillery after John’s career in corporate finance left him searching for something more hands-on and creative. Their 2,500-square-foot production facility houses a custom 500-gallon copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, where they craft bourbon, rye whiskey, and moonshine using locally-sourced grains when possible. The journey from concept to first bottle took nearly three years, with the Wards navigating federal and state regulations while learning the intricacies of distillation. John handles most of the production work, having studied under established distillers in Kentucky, while Christy manages the business side and visitor experience. Their approach focuses on small-batch production with careful attention to each step, from mashing and fermentation to the hand-bottling process. The distillery combines working production with a welcoming tasting room that showcases their spirits alongside the story of how two corporate refugees became craft distillers. You’ll find a rustic-meets-modern aesthetic with exposed beams, copper accents, and large windows overlooking the stills. The atmosphere strikes a balance between educational and relaxed, making it accessible for both whiskey enthusiasts and casual visitors curious about the distilling process.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Corporate Refugees Making Real Whiskey

Loping Crow represents part of North Carolina’s relatively new craft distilling renaissance, being among the first grain-to-glass operations in Stanly County. Their location gives them access to quality local corn and wheat from regional farms, allowing for more control over their supply chain than many small distilleries manage. The Wards’ corporate backgrounds show in their methodical approach to production and business operations, bringing a level of systematic planning that’s sometimes missing in passion-project distilleries. They’re also one of the few distilleries in the region offering both traditional and flavored moonshines alongside their aged whiskeys, giving visitors a broader spectrum of spirits to explore in one location.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Founded by the People Who Pour Your Tasting

Tours and tastings are led by John or Christy Ward themselves, giving you direct access to the founders rather than hired guides reading scripts. You’ll walk through their production area to see the mashing, fermentation, and distillation process up close, with explanations tailored to your level of interest and knowledge. The tasting room experience includes samples of their current releases, typically including their flagship bourbon, rye whiskey, and a selection of their moonshines. The space has a comfortable, living-room feel with seating areas where you can linger over your tasting rather than feeling rushed through a production line experience.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Over Polished Every Single Time

This works well for people who prefer intimate, personal experiences over polished tourist operations. You’re getting authentic interaction with the actual founders, not a corporate-managed visitor center, which means more genuine conversation about the craft and business of distilling. It’s particularly good for visitors who appreciate the entrepreneurial story behind craft distilling and want to support a true small business. However, don’t expect elaborate facilities or a wide range of amenities – this is a working distillery first, visitor attraction second. The spirits are solid but still developing their signature character as the operation matures.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours and availability, as they sometimes adjust schedules for production needs or personal commitments. The distillery is a bit off the beaten path, so GPS coordinates are reliable, but don’t expect prominent road signage. Weekend visits often offer the best chance to meet both John and Christy, while weekday visits might catch production in action. Ask about their aging process and future plans – they’re still relatively new, so their aged spirits will continue evolving. If you’re interested in moonshine, try their flavored varieties, which showcase their creativity beyond traditional whiskey production.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Loping Crow Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
Yes, reservations are required since John and Christy personally lead all tours and tastings. They need to coordinate around production schedules and want to ensure they can give each group proper attention. Call ahead or message them through social media to schedule your visit.
How long have they been making whiskey?
Loping Crow opened in 2019, so their aged whiskeys are still relatively young but developing character. The bourbon and rye are currently aged 2-4 years, with older expressions planned as their inventory matures. Their moonshines and unaged spirits showcase their distilling skills while the whiskeys age.
What should I expect from a small craft distillery visit?
This is an intimate, personal experience rather than a polished tourist attraction. You’ll get direct interaction with the founders, see actual production equipment in use, and learn about the real challenges and rewards of starting a distillery. The focus is on education and authentic conversation about craft distilling.
