ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Distillery That Actually Works

Old Spirit Distillery sits in an industrial complex in Oceanside, Long Island, where founder Mike Benedetto transformed his passion for craft spirits into a full-scale operation in 2018. After years working in construction, Benedetto decided to pursue distilling full-time, setting up shop in a 3,000-square-foot facility that houses both production and a tasting room. The distillery focuses on small-batch bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka, using locally sourced grains when possible and aging their whiskeys in charred American oak barrels stored on-site. Benedetto’s journey into distilling started as a hobby in his garage, experimenting with different mash bills and distillation techniques until friends and family convinced him to go commercial. He installed a 500-gallon copper pot still as the centerpiece of his operation, along with smaller pilot stills for experimental batches. The team remains lean but passionate, with Benedetto handling most of the distillation himself while his wife manages the business side and customer relations. Visitors find themselves in a working distillery where you can watch the entire process unfold, from mashing to bottling. The tasting room has a rustic industrial feel with exposed brick walls and views into the production area through large windows. Benedetto often leads tours personally, explaining his distillation philosophy and the challenges of starting a craft distillery on Long Island. The atmosphere is unpretentious and educational, perfect for anyone curious about how spirits actually get made.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Long Island Grain to Glass In an Industrial Complex

Old Spirit stands out as one of the few grain-to-glass distilleries operating on Long Island, handling every step of production in-house rather than sourcing bulk spirits from elsewhere. Benedetto’s construction background shows in the custom-built fermentation tanks and the attention to detail in the facility’s layout, designed for both efficiency and visitor viewing. The distillery’s location in suburban Oceanside is unusual for craft distilleries, which typically gravitate toward rural areas or trendy urban districts, but this gives them access to Long Island’s growing craft beverage scene while keeping overhead costs manageable.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Tourist Trap Just Real Distilling

You’ll walk into a working production facility where the smell of fermenting grains and aging whiskey fills the air, and the sound of the still bubbling away creates a soundtrack to your visit. Benedetto or one of his team members leads small groups through the entire process, from grain delivery to barrel aging, explaining the science behind fermentation and distillation in straightforward terms. The tasting room overlooks the production floor through large windows, so you can sip their bourbon while watching them actually make it. Tours feel personal and informal, more like visiting a friend’s operation than a corporate facility.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive For Serious Spirits Fans

If you’re interested in seeing how craft spirits actually get made rather than just touring a fancy facility, Old Spirit delivers exactly that experience. The operation is small enough that you’ll likely meet the owner and get genuine insights into the business side of craft distilling, which bigger operations can’t offer. Don’t expect elaborate cocktail programs or restaurant-quality food, but do expect to learn something new about distillation and taste spirits that were literally made in the room next door. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the process, but casual tourists looking for Instagram-worthy experiences might find it too industrial.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your visit since tours depend on production schedules and Benedetto’s availability. The facility shares space in an industrial complex, so look for the building number rather than prominent signage. Saturday afternoons tend to be the best time for tours since that’s when they’re most likely to have active distillation happening. Ask about their experimental batches if you’re interested in tasting something that might not make it to regular production. Parking is free and plentiful in the complex lot, but GPS can sometimes struggle with the exact location, so call if you’re having trouble finding it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Old Spirit Distillery Inc — Visitor FAQ

How far in advance should I book a tour?
It’s best to call at least a week ahead since tours are scheduled around production activities and Mike’s availability. Weekend tours book up faster, especially during fall and winter months when people are looking for indoor activities.
Can I buy bottles of spirits that aren’t available elsewhere?
Yes, they often have small-batch experiments and barrel-strength versions available only at the distillery. These limited releases sell out quickly, so ask what’s special when you visit.
Is this suitable for someone who doesn’t know much about whiskey?
Absolutely. Mike explains everything in plain English and focuses on the actual process rather than using industry jargon. You’ll leave understanding how distillation works regardless of your starting knowledge level.
