ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Converted Barn That Makes Montana Whiskey

Dusty Road Distillery sits on 396 Davis School Road in Carter, Montana, a small agricultural community about 45 minutes from Billings. Founded by husband-and-wife team Josh and Sarah Mitchell in 2019, this family operation transforms locally-sourced grains into small-batch bourbon, rye, and vodka in a converted barn that once stored wheat from surrounding farms. Josh brings mechanical engineering expertise from his previous career in oil and gas, while Sarah handles the business side after years in hospitality management. They started this venture after falling in love with craft distilling during a Kentucky bourbon trail trip, deciding Montana’s clean water and abundant grain made perfect sense for their own operation. The couple produces everything on a 500-gallon copper still they named ‘Big Sky,’ processing about 1,000 bottles per month while maintaining day jobs. Their facility includes the production area, a small tasting room decorated with vintage farming equipment, and a retail space where you can buy bottles directly from the source. The Mitchells focus on bourbon and rye whiskeys that showcase Montana grain character, plus a clean vodka that’s become popular with locals who appreciate its smoothness.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Farm to Bottle Within Fifty Miles

What sets Dusty Road apart is their commitment to using only Montana-grown grains, sourcing wheat and corn from farms within a 50-mile radius and working directly with local farmers to select specific varieties that contribute to their flavor profiles. Josh Mitchell’s engineering background shows in their custom-built grain handling system and precise temperature control during fermentation, while their location at 3,200 feet elevation affects both fermentation characteristics and aging conditions. The distillery operates on a true farm-to-bottle model that’s increasingly rare even in craft distilling, with the Mitchells personally visiting their grain suppliers and often helping with harvest to understand how weather patterns affect their raw materials.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

The Distillers Themselves Give Every Tour

Visits at Dusty Road feel more like hanging out with knowledgeable neighbors than a formal distillery tour. Josh or Sarah personally guide most visits, walking you through their converted barn space where you can see grain storage, the mashing process, and their copper still in action. The hour-long experience includes tasting their current releases while learning about their grain sourcing and production methods, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the technical side of distilling or the challenges of starting a distillery in rural Montana. The tasting room has a relaxed, farmhouse atmosphere with views of the surrounding wheat fields, and you’ll often hear stories about specific batches or the quirks of working with Montana’s extreme temperature swings.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive To Carter

This spot appeals most to visitors who appreciate authentic, small-scale craft distilling and don’t mind a slightly rustic experience. You’re getting genuine access to the distillers themselves and insight into how grain quality affects spirits, which bourbon enthusiasts find fascinating. The drive to Carter means this isn’t a casual stop, but if you’re exploring Montana’s agricultural regions or want to understand farm-to-bottle distilling, it’s worth the trip. Don’t expect polished tourist amenities or a huge selection of aged whiskeys since they’re still building inventory, but the personal attention and educational value make up for any limitations in the tasting lineup.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule visits since the Mitchells often run the operation solo and need to work around production schedules. The distillery is about a mile off Highway 2, and GPS can be spotty in this rural area, so look for the red barn with ‘Dusty Road Distillery’ painted on the side. Spring through fall offers the best experience when you can see grain deliveries and outdoor fermentation tanks in use. Ask Josh about their barrel aging experiments and how Montana’s dry climate affects whiskey maturation differently than Kentucky. If you’re interested in the technical aspects of small-batch distilling, mention it when booking since they love sharing details about their equipment and processes with fellow spirits nerds.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dusty Road Distillery — Visitor FAQ

How far in advance do I need to book a visit?
At least a week ahead is recommended since Josh and Sarah personally handle most visits and need to coordinate around production schedules. Weekend slots fill up faster, especially during harvest season.
What aged whiskeys do you have available for tasting?
Since they opened in 2019, their whiskey inventory is still building. Current offerings depend on what’s reached maturity, but they’re transparent about age statements and always have their vodka available for tasting.
Is the distillery easy to find in rural Carter?
It’s about a mile off Highway 2, and cell service can be spotty. Look for the red barn with their sign, and don’t hesitate to call if you get lost since they’re used to helping visitors navigate the rural roads.
