ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Lake Country Craft Distilling In the Heart of the Ozarks

Ozark Distillery sits along State Highway KK in Osage Beach, right in the heart of Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks region. Founded by Dennis and Pam Ray in 2010, this craft distillery emerged from Dennis’s longtime fascination with traditional distilling methods and his desire to create premium spirits using local ingredients. The operation runs out of a 5,000-square-foot facility that houses their custom-built copper pot still and fermentation tanks, where they produce bourbon, moonshine, and flavored spirits that capture the essence of the Ozarks. Dennis Ray brings decades of business experience to the operation, but his real passion lies in perfecting the art of small-batch distillation. The couple spent years researching historical distilling techniques and sourcing the right equipment before opening their doors to the public. They focus on using Missouri corn and other regional grains when possible, working with local farmers to maintain that connection to the land. The distillery’s approach centers on traditional methods combined with modern precision, allowing them to control every aspect of production from grain to bottle. Visitors get an authentic look at craft distilling in action, with tours that take you through the entire production process. The tasting room offers samples of their various spirits, from their signature bourbon to their more adventurous flavored moonshines. It’s a straightforward operation where you can actually see the stills working and talk directly with the people who make the spirits. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational, making it accessible for both spirits enthusiasts and curious tourists exploring the Lake of the Ozarks area.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Traditional Methods Meet Missouri Corn Heritage

What sets Ozark Distillery apart is its commitment to showcasing traditional Ozarks distilling heritage in a region better known for lakes than liquor. They’re one of the few distilleries operating in the Lake of the Ozarks area, giving them a unique position as both a craft spirits producer and a piece of local cultural preservation. Their use of Missouri-grown corn connects them directly to the agricultural traditions of the region, while their small-batch approach allows for experimentation with flavored spirits that reflect local tastes and ingredients. The combination of serious bourbon production alongside more playful moonshine varieties gives visitors a broader perspective on American distilling traditions.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Small Batch Operation Where You Meet the Makers

Tours at Ozark Distillery give you a hands-on look at their production process, starting with the grain room and moving through fermentation, distillation, and aging areas. You’ll see their copper pot still in action and learn about the specific techniques they use to create their different spirits. The tasting portion lets you sample their bourbon alongside their various moonshine flavors, with staff explaining the production differences between each style. The facility isn’t huge, so tours feel intimate and personal, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the process. The whole experience takes about an hour and gives you a solid understanding of how craft distilling works on a smaller scale.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect Lake Country Distillery Discovery

If you’re exploring the Lake of the Ozarks and have any interest in craft spirits, Ozark Distillery makes for a worthwhile stop. It’s particularly good for people who want to understand the distilling process without getting overwhelmed by a massive operation. The variety of spirits they produce means there’s likely something for different palates, from serious bourbon drinkers to those curious about flavored moonshines. Don’t expect the polish of larger distillery destinations, but do expect genuine enthusiasm from the people making the spirits. It’s a solid addition to a Lake of the Ozarks trip, especially if you’re looking for something beyond the typical lake activities.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm tour times and availability, as they’re a smaller operation that may adjust schedules based on production needs. The distillery is located on State Highway KK, which is easy enough to find but don’t rely solely on GPS in this area. Plan for about an hour for the full tour and tasting experience. If you’re interested in their bourbon, ask about their aging process and future releases, as they’re still building up their aged inventory. Spring through fall offers the best visiting conditions, and weekends tend to be busier with Lake of the Ozarks tourists. Bring cash for purchases, as smaller distilleries sometimes have limited payment options.
