ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

One Man's Vision Made Real in Missouri

Samuel Berton Distilling sits in historic Labadie, Missouri, along the Missouri River about 45 minutes west of St. Louis. Founded by Samuel Berton in 2018, this craft distillery operates out of a converted storefront on Front Street, bringing small-batch bourbon and rye production to this quiet river town. Berton, who transitioned from a career in engineering, named the operation after himself and dove into the world of grain-to-glass distilling with a focus on traditional methods and local ingredients. The journey from concept to pour took Berton several years of planning, permitting, and perfecting recipes. He sources Missouri corn and other grains when possible, running everything through a custom copper still system in the compact but efficient distillery space. The operation remains deliberately small-scale, allowing Berton to oversee every step of production from mashing to bottling. What started as a passion project has evolved into a legitimate craft distillery serving both locals and visitors exploring Missouri’s growing spirits scene. Visitors find themselves in an intimate setting where you can actually watch the distilling process and talk directly with Berton about his craft. The tasting room feels more like a neighbor’s well-stocked home bar than a commercial operation, which fits the personal approach he takes to every batch. You’re tasting spirits made by the guy standing right there explaining how he tweaked the mash bill or adjusted the aging process.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Every Bottle Gets Personal Attention

Samuel Berton Distilling represents the pure craft distillery experience – one person’s vision executed on a scale where every bottle gets personal attention. Berton handles most operations himself, from sourcing grains to bottling, which means you’re getting spirits that reflect individual craftsmanship rather than mass production. The Labadie location puts it off the beaten path compared to St. Louis area competitors, creating a more authentic small-town distillery experience. The intimate scale means Berton can experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques that larger operations can’t justify, resulting in spirits that change and evolve as he refines his approach.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Distiller Not Just the Brand

You’ll walk into a space that feels more like visiting a passionate hobbyist’s workshop than a commercial distillery – because that’s essentially what it is, scaled up. Berton typically handles tastings himself, walking you through his current lineup and explaining his process with the enthusiasm of someone who genuinely loves what he’s doing. The production area is right there, so you can see the still, fermentation tanks, and bottling setup while learning how everything works. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup where you can ask questions and get honest answers about what works, what doesn’t, and what he’s trying next.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Spirit Enthusiasts Worth the Drive

This is perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to meet the actual distiller and understand the craft behind small-batch production. You won’t find polished tour groups or elaborate visitor centers – instead, you get authentic interaction with someone passionate about his craft and willing to share that knowledge. If you’re looking for a quick, convenient tasting experience or impressive facilities, you might be better served elsewhere. But if you want to taste spirits made by the person standing across from you and learn about the real challenges of starting a distillery from scratch, this delivers exactly that experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check social media before visiting since hours can vary based on production schedules and Berton’s availability. The Front Street location is easy to find but parking is limited, so be prepared to park on the street. Ask about his latest experiments or seasonal releases – since he’s not locked into large production runs, there’s often something new to try. Don’t expect a lengthy formal tour, but do expect genuine conversation about the distilling process. Bring cash for bottle purchases since small operations sometimes have limited payment options.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Samuel Berton Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, definitely call ahead or check their social media for availability. Since this is essentially a one-person operation, Berton needs to balance production work with visitor time, so advance notice ensures he’ll be available for tastings and tours.
How long does a typical visit last?
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour, though it can stretch longer if you’re genuinely interested in the distilling process. Berton enjoys talking about his craft, so visits tend to be as long or short as your interest level dictates.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, bottles are available for purchase on-site. Selection varies based on what’s currently ready and in stock, since production runs are small and batches sell out. Bring cash as backup since payment options may be limited.
