ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Industrial Park Distillery Making Bartender-Grade Spirits

Tattersall Distillery River Falls sits in an industrial park on Paulson Road, about 30 miles east of Minneapolis-St. Paul. Founded by Jon Kreidler and Dan Oskey in 2015, this Wisconsin outpost serves as the production facility and tasting room extension of their original Minneapolis operation. Kreidler, a former IT professional, and Oskey, who worked in finance, started Tattersall after becoming obsessed with the craft cocktail renaissance and wanting to make the spirits that bartenders actually wanted to use. The River Falls location opened in 2018 as both a production expansion and a way to tap into Wisconsin’s more distillery-friendly laws. The 10,000 square foot facility houses their main production operation, including custom copper stills and fermentation tanks that can handle significantly more volume than their original Minneapolis setup. They’re known for their extensive lineup that goes well beyond whiskey—gin, aquavit, liqueurs, and botanical spirits that reflect Kreidler’s fascination with unusual flavors and Oskey’s precision with recipes. What you’ll find here is a working distillery that feels more like a craft brewery taproom than a traditional whiskey shrine. The tasting room overlooks the production floor through large windows, and you can often catch the team in action. They’ve built a reputation for innovation over tradition, creating spirits that bartenders love but that also work for home cocktail enthusiasts. The vibe is unpretentious and educational—they want you to understand what makes their gin different or why their bourbon uses that particular mash bill.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Beyond Bourbon Gin and Aquavit Specialists

Tattersall’s approach centers on botanical complexity and bartender-focused recipes rather than following traditional whiskey playbooks. Their gin lineup includes multiple expressions with distinct flavor profiles, and they produce aquavit—a Scandinavian spirit that’s rare in American craft distilling. The founders’ backgrounds in tech and finance show up in their methodical recipe development and precise production tracking. They also operate under Wisconsin’s more permissive distillery laws, allowing them to serve full cocktails and operate more like a bar than Minnesota regulations permit at their original location.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Watch Production While You Taste

You’ll taste in a bright, modern space that feels more industrial-chic than rustic barn. The bar overlooks the production floor, so you can watch distillation and bottling while you sample. Staff members are typically production team members who can explain the technical side of what you’re drinking. Tastings focus on their diverse portfolio—you might try three different gins, their bourbon, aquavit, and a seasonal liqueur in one flight. The experience is educational but relaxed, with bartenders who genuinely want to help you understand what makes each spirit tick.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Gin Lovers Absolutely Worth It

This works best for spirits enthusiasts who want to explore beyond bourbon and rye. If you’re curious about gin, aquavit, or craft cocktail ingredients, Tattersall offers tastings you won’t find at most distilleries. The location makes sense if you’re already in the St. Croix Valley or making a Twin Cities spirits crawl. It’s not a destination distillery with stunning views or historic significance, but the quality of the spirits and knowledge of the staff make it worthwhile for anyone interested in the technical side of distilling. Skip it if you’re only interested in whiskey or want a more traditional distillery atmosphere.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website for current hours—they sometimes close for private events or production needs. The River Falls location can be tricky to find in the industrial park, so use GPS and look for building numbers. Ask to try their gin lineup if you’re even slightly curious about gin—it’s where they really shine. The staff knows their recipes inside and out, so don’t hesitate to ask technical questions about botanicals or distillation techniques. Bottle prices are reasonable, and they often have small-batch releases available only at the distillery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tattersall Distillery River Falls — Visitor FAQ

What’s the difference between this location and the Minneapolis distillery?
River Falls handles most of their production and offers tours of the main distilling operation. Minneapolis focuses more on cocktails and has a full bar menu. Both offer tastings, but River Falls gives you a better look at how the spirits are actually made.
Do I need to be into gin to enjoy a visit here?
Not at all—they make bourbon, liqueurs, and aquavit too. But their gin program is really impressive, so it’s worth trying even if you think you don’t like gin. Their botanical approach might change your mind.
How long should I plan for a visit?
Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour for a tasting and brief tour. If you’re really into the technical aspects or want to try multiple cocktails, plan for up to 90 minutes.
