Founding Spirits sits right in the heart of downtown DC at 600 Massachusetts Avenue, occupying a sleek space that feels more urban cocktail destination than traditional distillery. Founded in 2016 by husband-and-wife team Nick and Caroline Farina, this operation emerged from their shared passion for craft spirits and Nick’s background in hospitality. The 3,000-square-foot facility houses both production and a polished tasting room where DC professionals and tourists alike come to sample house-made vodka, gin, and whiskey.
Nick brings restaurant industry experience to the venture, having worked in hospitality before diving into distilling, while Caroline handles much of the business operations. They started small with a 300-gallon copper still from Louisville, focusing initially on vodka and gin before expanding into whiskey production. The couple saw an opportunity to bring craft distilling to DC’s growing food and drink scene, setting up shop in a neighborhood that’s become a hub for local businesses.
The experience here leans more toward craft cocktails than traditional distillery tours. You’re not walking through massive rickhouses or watching grain being milled – this is urban distilling at its core. The tasting room dominates the space, with the production equipment visible but compact. It’s designed for people who want to taste quality spirits in a refined setting rather than get their boots dirty learning about mash bills and fermentation.
