ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Maryland Farm That Makes Wine and Spirits

Fiore Winery & Distillery sits on 75 acres of rolling farmland in Pylesville, Maryland, about 45 minutes northeast of Baltimore. Mike and Rose Fiore founded this operation in 2008, starting as a winery before expanding into spirits production. Mike brought his background in construction and Rose her hospitality experience to create what’s become Harford County’s first farm distillery. They produce vodka, gin, rum, and seasonal spirits alongside their wine operations in a renovated barn complex that maintains its agricultural roots. The Fiores didn’t set out to become distillers initially. Their journey began with grape growing and winemaking, but Mike’s curiosity about distillation led them to add a copper still and expand their license around 2015. Rose handles much of the visitor experience while Mike focuses on production, creating spirits that reflect their farm-to-glass philosophy. They grow some of their own botanicals and work with local farmers when possible, keeping everything rooted in Maryland agriculture. Visitors get a dual experience here—part working farm, part production facility. You’re not walking through a polished industrial space but rather a functional barn where the smell of fermenting fruit mingles with the clean scent of distillation. The tasting room overlooks the production area, so you can watch the process while sampling. It’s casual and unpretentious, with the Fiores often personally greeting visitors and explaining their craft.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Winery and Distillery Under One Barn Roof

Fiore operates as both winery and distillery under one roof, which is relatively uncommon in Maryland. Their farm setting means they can experiment with estate-grown botanicals for their gin and use wine grape pomace in some of their distillation processes. The facility maintains its working farm atmosphere rather than trying to create a polished visitor center experience. Mike and Rose often personally conduct tours and tastings, giving visitors direct access to the people actually making the spirits. Their small batch approach allows for seasonal experimentation—they’ve produced apple brandy from local orchards and botanical spirits using herbs grown on property.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Polish Required Just Real Farm Craft

Tours happen in the production barn where you can see the copper still, fermentation tanks, and aging barrels up close. Mike or Rose typically lead these personally, explaining their dual wine and spirits operation while you watch the actual production process. The tasting room has large windows overlooking the equipment, so even without a tour you can observe distillation happening. Tastings include their core spirits—vodka, gin, and rum—along with seasonal offerings that might include fruit brandies or botanical experiments. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions about their farm-to-glass approach.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Country Drive From Baltimore

If you’re interested in small-scale craft distilling and don’t mind a more rustic experience, Fiore delivers. This isn’t a destination for bourbon enthusiasts since they focus on clear spirits and fruit brandies, but gin lovers will appreciate their botanical approach. The farm setting and personal attention from the owners make it worthwhile for people who want to understand the actual production process rather than just sample products. It’s particularly appealing if you’re already exploring Maryland’s wine country since you can experience both sides of their operation. Don’t expect a polished corporate distillery experience—this is authentic small-batch production with all the charm and limitations that brings.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re open and distilling—as a small operation, their schedule can vary seasonally. The location is rural, so GPS sometimes gets confused; look for their farm signs along Whiteford Road. Combine your visit with other Harford County wineries if you’re making a day of it. Ask about their seasonal spirits since these limited offerings showcase their experimental side. Spring through fall offers the best experience when you can see the farm in full operation and outdoor seating is available. Parking is gravel but adequate, and the barn can get chilly in winter months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Fiore Winery & Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you make bourbon or whiskey?
No, Fiore focuses on vodka, gin, rum, and seasonal fruit brandies. They don’t produce aged whiskeys or bourbon, instead concentrating on spirits that can be made and enjoyed relatively quickly from their farm-grown ingredients.
Can I visit without calling ahead?
While walk-ins are often welcome, it’s smart to call first since they’re a small operation. Their schedule can vary seasonally, and you’ll get a better experience if Mike or Rose are available to personally show you around the facility.
What’s the difference between your wine and spirits operations?
They operate both under the same license and often use similar ingredients. Some of their spirits incorporate wine grape pomace, and they use the same farm-to-glass philosophy for both. You can taste both wine and spirits during your visit to compare their approaches.
