ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Roulaison Distilling Co sits in a converted warehouse space on South Broad Avenue in New Orleans, founded in 2014 by T.R. Clontz, a former petroleum engineer who traded oil rigs for copper stills. The name ‘roulaison’ comes from Louisiana French, referring to the sugar cane harvest season—a nod to the agricultural roots that define much of Louisiana’s spirit-making tradition. Clontz spent years researching distillation techniques and sourcing equipment before opening the doors to this 3,000-square-foot facility that houses custom-built copper pot stills and serves as both production space and tasting room. The distillery focuses on American whiskey, rum, and gin, with an emphasis on using Louisiana ingredients whenever possible. The journey from concept to opening took nearly four years, including navigating New Orleans’ complex permitting process and convincing city officials that a distillery could work in this industrial corridor. Clontz brought on local talent to help develop recipes and manage operations, creating a small team that handles everything from mashing to bottling on-site. The space maintains an industrial feel with exposed brick walls and concrete floors, but they’ve added bar seating and display areas that make it welcoming for visitors who want to see how craft spirits come together in one of America’s most booze-loving cities.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Roulaison apart is their commitment to Louisiana terroir in ways that go beyond typical ‘local ingredients’ marketing speak. They source sugar cane from Louisiana farms for their rum production and incorporate local honey into some expressions. The distillery operates at a scale that allows for genuine experimentation—their pot stills can handle small batches that let them test different grain bills and aging techniques without massive financial risk. Clontz’s engineering background shows up in their meticulous approach to cuts during distillation and their detailed record-keeping of every batch. They’re also one of the few distilleries in New Orleans proper that handles the entire process on-site, from fermentation through bottling, rather than sourcing spirits from elsewhere.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grains mingles with the sweet aroma of aging spirits. The tasting room occupies one corner of the production space, so you’re literally surrounded by the equipment that makes what you’re drinking. Tours are intimate affairs—usually just a few people at a time—where you can see the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and copper stills up close. The staff knows the technical details behind each step and can explain how different grain bills affect flavor or why they make certain cuts during distillation. Tastings focus on their core lineup with explanations of how each spirit reflects their approach to Louisiana distilling. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational rather than polished or touristy.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in seeing craft distilling at an authentic scale where you can actually talk to the people making the spirits, Roulaison delivers that experience. It’s not going to wow you with elaborate tours or fancy tasting rooms—this is about the spirits and the process. Whiskey geeks will appreciate the technical discussion and the chance to taste products that aren’t widely distributed. Casual visitors might find it less entertaining than some of the more polished distillery experiences in other cities, but that’s also what makes it genuine. You’re seeing how small-batch distilling actually works, not a sanitized version designed for tour groups.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re open and available for tastings—this isn’t the kind of place where you can just show up anytime. Weekend afternoons tend to be the most reliable times to catch them with time to chat. Ask specific questions about their process if you’re curious—they’re proud of their technical approach and happy to explain details. The location can be a bit tricky to find since it’s in an industrial area, so double-check the address and look for signage on the building. Parking is usually available on the street, but the neighborhood isn’t the most scenic, so manage expectations about the surroundings. If you’re planning to buy bottles, bring cash as a backup payment method.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Roulaison Distilling Co — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, you should call ahead to schedule a visit. As a small operation, they don’t always have someone available to give tours or tastings, especially during production times. Calling ensures someone will be there to show you around and explain the process.
What’s the neighborhood like around the distillery?
The distillery is located in an industrial area of New Orleans, so it’s not a scenic tourist destination. It’s in a working warehouse district with other businesses and light industrial operations. The area is safe during daytime hours but doesn’t have the charm of the French Quarter or other tourist areas.
How long does a typical visit take?
Plan on about an hour for a complete experience including tour and tasting. The tour itself is usually 30-45 minutes, depending on how many technical questions you ask, followed by tastings of their available spirits. If you’re just stopping by for a quick tasting, it could be shorter.
