ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Sugar Country Rum Made Where Cane Grows

Louisiana Spirits operates out of Lacassine, Louisiana, a small town in rural Jefferson Davis Parish where they’ve been crafting Bayou Rum since 2013. Founded by brothers Tim and Trey Litel along with Skip Cortes, this operation emerged from their shared vision to create an authentic Louisiana rum using local ingredients. The distillery sits on South Frontage Road in what was once sugar cane country, making their choice to focus on rum both geographically and historically fitting. They produce several varieties of rum using Louisiana sugarcane and molasses, staying true to the region’s deep connection to sugar production. The Litel brothers brought business backgrounds to the venture, while Cortes contributed spirits industry expertise, and together they’ve built Louisiana Spirits into one of the state’s notable craft distilleries. Their flagship Bayou Rum line includes white, gold, and spiced varieties, with each expression designed to capture the essence of Louisiana’s bayou culture. The facility operates as both a production space and visitor destination, though it maintains the feel of a working distillery rather than a polished tourist attraction. You’ll find the operation reflects the straightforward, no-nonsense approach of its founders—they’re more focused on making good rum than putting on a show. The location gives visitors a genuine taste of rural Louisiana, surrounded by the flat farmland and slow-moving waterways that define this part of Acadiana.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Local Molasses Louisiana Terroir in Every Bottle

Louisiana Spirits distinguishes itself by being one of the few rum distilleries in Louisiana that sources its molasses and sugarcane locally, connecting directly to the state’s centuries-old sugar industry heritage. Their location in Jefferson Davis Parish puts them in the heart of Louisiana’s sugar country, where they can work with local suppliers rather than importing raw materials from the Caribbean like many American rum producers. The distillery’s approach emphasizes Louisiana terroir—they believe the local climate, water, and ingredients create a distinctly regional rum profile that you won’t find elsewhere. Their Bayou Rum line reflects this philosophy, with flavor profiles that lean into the rich, earthy characteristics of Louisiana molasses rather than trying to mimic Caribbean styles.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Rum Lovers The Real Louisiana Experience

This visit appeals most to rum enthusiasts and anyone interested in Louisiana’s agricultural heritage and craft spirits scene. You’ll get an authentic look at small-scale rum production without the crowds you might find at larger distilleries. The experience works well for people who appreciate learning about regional spirits and seeing how local ingredients translate into the final product. However, if you’re looking for elaborate facilities or extensive entertainment, you might find this too low-key. The value here is in the genuine, educational experience and the chance to taste rum that truly reflects Louisiana terroir.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm tour availability since this is a working production facility with limited visitor hours. The distillery is located on a rural road, so use GPS carefully and look for the Louisiana Spirits signage. Plan to spend about an hour for the full tour and tasting experience. Ask questions about their local sourcing—the staff knows the regional suppliers and can explain how Louisiana molasses differs from other sources. If you’re interested in rum production techniques, this is a great place to learn since they’re happy to discuss their process in detail. Bring cash for bottle purchases, and consider buying their spiced rum if you want something that showcases their Louisiana flavor profile.
