ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Farm That Happens to Make Whiskey

MB Roland Distillery sits on a working farm in Pembroke, Kentucky, where Paul and Merry Beth Roland turned their agricultural roots into craft bourbon production. Founded in 2009, this farm-to-bottle operation produces whiskey using corn grown right on their property, making them one of the few distilleries that can claim complete control from grain to glass. The Rolands converted their family farm into a distillery operation, installing copper pot stills in buildings that once served purely agricultural purposes. They produce bourbon, wheat whiskey, and white dog using traditional methods combined with their farming expertise. What started as a retirement project for the Rolands has evolved into a respected Kentucky craft distillery that stays true to its agricultural origins. The operation remains intentionally small-scale, with production focused on quality over quantity, allowing them to maintain hands-on control over every step of the process.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Corn Grown Here Distilled Next Door

MB Roland is one of the rare grain-to-glass distilleries in Kentucky, growing their own corn on the same property where they distill. This farm-based approach means they control every aspect of production, from planting and harvesting to mashing and aging. The Rolands’ background as farmers gives them an understanding of grain quality that many distillers don’t possess, and they use this knowledge to select the best corn from their harvest for whiskey production. Their location in rural Christian County keeps them connected to Kentucky’s agricultural heritage while operating outside the typical bourbon tourism corridors.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Farmers Who Make the Bourbon

Tours at MB Roland offer a genuine behind-the-scenes look at small-batch production, often led by the Roland family themselves. You’ll see the copper pot stills up close and learn about their grain-to-glass process, including how they select corn from their own fields. The tasting room maintains a farmhouse atmosphere that reflects the operation’s agricultural roots, and visitors can sample their bourbon, wheat whiskey, and unaged spirits. The experience feels personal and authentic, without the polished presentation of larger distilleries.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Kentucky Agriculture In Every Bottle

This distillery appeals to bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate the farm-to-bottle story and want to understand the agricultural side of whiskey production. You’ll get an intimate look at small-scale distilling and meet people who are genuinely passionate about both farming and whiskey making. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive gift shops – this is a working farm distillery that prioritizes substance over flash. It’s perfect for visitors who want to support local craft producers and learn about traditional Kentucky agriculture.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your visit, as this is a small operation that doesn’t always have regular tour hours. The distillery is located on rural roads, so use GPS carefully and look for farm signage. Ask about their grain selection process and seasonal farming activities during your visit – the Rolands enjoy sharing their agricultural knowledge. Try their wheat whiskey if available, as it showcases their grain expertise. Spring and fall visits might coincide with planting or harvest activities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

MB Roland Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow your own corn for whiskey?
Yes, MB Roland grows corn on their farm property and uses it in their whiskey production. This grain-to-glass approach gives them complete control over the process from field to bottle.
How far in advance should I book a tour?
It’s best to call at least a few days ahead, as this is a small family operation that schedules tours around their farming and distilling activities. They don’t have set daily tour times like larger distilleries.
What makes your bourbon different from other Kentucky distilleries?
Their bourbon is made with corn grown right on the distillery property, and the Rolands’ farming background means they understand grain quality from the agricultural side. This farm-to-bottle approach is rare in the bourbon industry.
