ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Bourbon Farm Not Just a Distillery

Bluegrass Distillers sits on a working farm in Midway, Kentucky, where founders John Caudill and Justin Thompson turned their passion for Kentucky bourbon into a farm-to-bottle operation in 2013. The distillery operates out of a restored barn on Elkwood Farm, where they grow their own corn and source other grains locally. What started as two friends experimenting with small batches has grown into a legitimate craft distillery that combines traditional Kentucky bourbon-making with modern small-batch techniques. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits using a combination of pot stills and column stills, keeping production deliberately small to maintain quality control. The farm setting gives the whole operation an authentic Kentucky feel that you won’t find at the bigger commercial distilleries down the road in Versailles or Frankfort.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Corn from the Field Whiskey in the Glass

The farm-to-bottle approach sets Bluegrass Distillers apart from most Kentucky operations. They actually grow corn on the property and work directly with local farmers for wheat and other grains, giving them control over the entire process from seed to glass. The restored barn facility maintains the agricultural character while housing modern distilling equipment. Being located in Midway puts them in the heart of Kentucky’s horse country, surrounded by limestone-filtered water sources that bourbon makers prize. The scale is genuinely small—they’re producing hundreds of barrels per year, not thousands, which allows for hands-on attention to every batch.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Restored Barn Tours With the Founders

Tours take you through the working farm operation, where you can see the grain storage, milling, and fermentation areas in the converted barn space. The tasting room has a rustic farm atmosphere with views of the property, and tastings include their bourbon and rye along with seasonal offerings. Tours are intimate since they keep groups small, and you’ll likely meet one of the founders who can tell you about their journey from concept to operating distillery. The experience feels authentic to Kentucky’s agricultural bourbon heritage rather than polished for mass tourism.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Kentucky Craft Worth the Drive

If you’re looking for an authentic Kentucky craft distillery experience without the crowds, this is worth the drive to Midway. It’s perfect for bourbon enthusiasts who want to see small-batch production and meet the actual people behind the spirits. The farm setting and personal attention make it feel special, though don’t expect the elaborate visitor centers you’ll find at larger operations. It’s better for people who appreciate the craft and process over flashy presentations. The location also puts you in beautiful horse country if you want to combine it with other Midway attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule tours since they don’t run on a fixed schedule like larger distilleries. The farm location means GPS might not be perfectly accurate, so look for the Elkwood Farm signage on Leestown Road. Weekdays are often better for getting personal attention from the founders. Ask about their grain-to-glass process and local sourcing—it’s what makes them different. If you’re visiting multiple distilleries, this makes a good contrast to the bigger commercial operations in the area. Parking is informal farm-style, so don’t expect marked spaces.
