ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

America's First Urban Brandy In Bourbon Country

Copper & Kings sits in a converted 1800s warehouse on Louisville’s East Washington Street, making American brandy in the heart of bourbon country. Founded in 2014 by Joe Heron, a former British spirits executive who fell in love with Kentucky’s distilling culture, this operation breaks from tradition by focusing on brandy instead of bourbon. The 35,000-square-foot facility houses copper pot stills imported from Germany, where they distill grape-based brandies using techniques that blend European tradition with American innovation. You’ll find them producing American brandy, gin, and absinthe in a space that feels more like an artist’s studio than a typical Kentucky distillery. Heron’s vision was to create America’s first urban brandy distillery, and he chose Louisville specifically for its distilling heritage and the musical culture that influences every aspect of their process. The team includes master distiller Brandon O’Daniel, who came from the beer industry, bringing a different perspective to spirits production. Their philosophy centers around what they call “sonic aging” – playing music to the barrels during maturation, believing vibrations affect the spirit’s development. The result is a distillery that challenges Kentucky’s bourbon-centric identity while respecting its craft heritage. Visitors walk through a space where copper gleams against exposed brick walls, and the aroma shifts from grape must to botanical gin preparations depending on what’s running through the stills.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Music Playing to Aging Barrels

Copper & Kings stands as America’s first urban brandy distillery, which means you’re experiencing something genuinely different in Kentucky’s bourbon landscape. Their sonic aging process isn’t just marketing – they actually play music to aging barrels, partnering with musicians to create specific playlists for different spirits. The facility runs on renewable energy and focuses on sustainability practices uncommon in craft distilling. Instead of using traditional bourbon mash bills, they work with grapes sourced from California and other regions, bringing European-style brandy production to the American South. Their copper pot stills were specifically designed for brandy production, not adapted bourbon equipment, and they’re one of the few American distilleries producing authentic absinthe alongside their core brandy lineup.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Copper Stills and Sonic Innovation

You’ll tour the production floor where Brandon O’Daniel or other team members explain how brandy differs from bourbon, walking you past the copper pot stills while they’re often in operation. The warehouse tour includes their barrel aging rooms where you can hear the music playing to the spirits – it’s not just a gimmick, you actually experience the sonic aging process. Tastings happen in their cocktail bar area where bartenders serve their brandies neat and in cocktails that showcase the spirits’ versatility. The space feels industrial but warm, with high ceilings, exposed brick, and copper accents throughout. Tours run about 45 minutes and include tastings of their core lineup plus seasonal releases when available. The staff genuinely knows the production process and can explain why they chose brandy over bourbon, making it educational for visitors used to traditional Kentucky distillery experiences.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

A Refreshing Break From Bourbon

If you’re curious about spirits beyond bourbon or want to see something genuinely different in Louisville, absolutely. This appeals most to cocktail enthusiasts and spirits nerds who appreciate learning about brandy production and innovative aging techniques. You won’t get the typical Kentucky bourbon experience, which is exactly the point – it’s refreshing if you’ve been hitting multiple bourbon distilleries. The sonic aging concept and sustainability focus make it interesting for visitors who like innovative approaches to traditional crafts. However, if you’re specifically seeking classic Kentucky bourbon culture or prefer traditional distillery experiences, you might find it too different from what you’re expecting. The location in Louisville’s urban core makes it easy to combine with other city attractions, unlike rural bourbon trail stops.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours online through their website since they run specific times rather than continuous tours. The distillery sits in an industrial area, so follow GPS carefully and look for the copper signage on the brick building. Parking is available on-site, which is convenient for Louisville. Try their brandy neat first before cocktails to understand what makes their product different from bourbon. Ask about their sonic aging playlists – staff love explaining the music selection process and which songs they play to different spirits. Visit during weekday afternoons if possible when production is more likely to be running and you can see the stills in operation. Their cocktail program showcases the spirits well, so don’t skip the bar experience if you have time. The tour includes the sustainability aspects of their operation, which adds depth beyond just the production story.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Copper & Kings — Visitor FAQ

What is sonic aging and does it actually work?
Sonic aging involves playing specific music to barrels during the maturation process, based on the theory that vibrations affect how spirits interact with wood. While scientifically debated, Copper & Kings has been doing it since opening and believes it contributes to their brandy’s character. You can actually hear the music playing in their barrel rooms during tours.
Why did they choose to make brandy instead of bourbon in Kentucky?
Founder Joe Heron wanted to bring European brandy-making traditions to America’s distilling capital while creating something unique in the bourbon-dominated landscape. He saw an opportunity to make high-quality American brandy using Kentucky’s craft distilling expertise and infrastructure.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, reservations are required for tours since they run at specific times rather than continuously. You can book through their website or by calling ahead. Tours often sell out on weekends, so booking a few days ahead is recommended.
