ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Lexington's First Urban Craft Distillery

Barrel House Distilling Co opened its doors in 2013 in Lexington’s Distillery District, founded by Peter Wright and Jeff Wiseman who transformed a former bourbon warehouse into Kentucky’s first urban distillery. The 10,000 square foot facility at 1200 Manchester Street sits in the heart of Lexington’s historic bourbon corridor, where Wright, a former pharmaceutical executive, and Wiseman, who came from the beer industry, decided to try their hand at craft spirits. They started with a 500-gallon copper pot still and big ambitions to prove that bourbon didn’t have to come from massive operations to be exceptional. The distillery produces bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin, with their bourbon being the clear flagship that put them on Kentucky’s craft distilling map. What began as two friends with zero distilling experience has grown into a legitimate player in Kentucky’s competitive whiskey scene, though they’ve kept the operation intentionally small-scale and hands-on. The building itself tells part of Kentucky’s bourbon story—it previously stored barrels for larger distilleries before Wright and Wiseman gave it new life as a production facility where visitors can watch the entire process from grain to bottle.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Wheated Bourbon in The City

Barrel House claims the distinction of being Lexington’s first distillery since Prohibition, which is pretty significant given the city’s deep bourbon roots. They’re one of the few urban distilleries in Kentucky, sitting right in town rather than out in farm country like most operations. The founders’ complete lack of distilling background actually worked in their favor—they approached everything from scratch, learning through trial and error rather than inherited assumptions. Their bourbon uses a wheated mash bill instead of the traditional rye, which gives it a softer, sweeter profile that stands out in tastings. The scale is genuinely small—they’re producing around 200 barrels per year, which means you’re getting spirits from specific batches rather than massive blends.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Crowds Just Real Distilling

Tours run about 45 minutes and take you through the entire facility, from the grain room where they show you the mash bill ingredients to the fermentation tanks where you can smell the active yeast working. You’ll see their copper pot still up close and walk through the rickhouse where barrels are aging just feet away from the production floor. The tasting room has a relaxed neighborhood bar feel with exposed brick and concrete floors that remind you this used to be a working warehouse. Tastings include their core lineup plus whatever barrel samples they’re experimenting with, and the staff actually knows the production details since it’s a small operation where everyone wears multiple hats. The whole experience feels authentic rather than polished—you’re seeing how craft distilling actually works, not a sanitized version designed for tourists.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect for Bourbon Nerds

If you’re curious about craft distilling and want to see how small operations work, this is perfect. You get a genuine behind-the-scenes look at production without the crowds you’d face at bigger distilleries. The bourbon is legitimately good—their wheated mash bill creates something noticeably different from standard high-rye recipes. However, don’t expect the elaborate visitor centers or extensive gift shops you’ll find at major distilleries. This is more educational than entertaining, better for spirits enthusiasts than casual tourists looking for a party atmosphere. The urban location makes it easy to combine with other Lexington activities, and the smaller groups mean you can actually ask questions and get detailed answers.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to book tours since they only run a few times per day and group sizes are limited. Parking can be tricky in the Distillery District, so arrive a few minutes early to find a spot on the street. Ask about barrel samples during your tasting—they often have experimental batches that aren’t available for purchase yet. The best time to visit is weekday afternoons when they’re actively distilling and you can see the still in operation. Don’t expect a lengthy tour—45 minutes covers everything since it’s a compact operation, but that means more time in the tasting room trying their spirits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Barrel House Distilling Co — Visitor FAQ

How long has Barrel House been operating?
They opened in 2013, making them Lexington’s first distillery since Prohibition. The founders started with zero distilling experience but have been perfecting their craft for over a decade now.
What makes their bourbon different from other Kentucky bourbons?
They use a wheated mash bill instead of the traditional high-rye recipe, which creates a softer, sweeter flavor profile. This puts them in the same category as Maker’s Mark rather than the spicier bourbons most Kentucky distilleries produce.
How small-scale is their operation really?
They produce around 200 barrels per year using a 500-gallon copper pot still. That’s tiny compared to major distilleries that might produce thousands of barrels monthly, which means you’re getting spirits from specific small batches.
