ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Historic Riverboat Warehouse Turned Craft Distillery

Mississippi River Distilling Company opened in 2010 in Le Claire, Iowa, founded by Garrett Burchett in a restored 1800s freight house along the Mississippi River. The distillery operates from a historic building that once served as a loading dock for riverboats, maintaining much of its original character with exposed brick walls and wooden beams. They produce a range of spirits including bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin, all crafted on-site using traditional copper pot stills. The Celebration Center serves as both their production facility and event space, offering visitors a chance to see the distilling process up close while enjoying cocktails made with their spirits. Burchett, who left a career in corporate finance to pursue his passion for distilling, built the operation from the ground up with a focus on small-batch production and local ingredients whenever possible. The distillery has become a cornerstone of Le Claire’s growing tourism scene, drawing visitors who come for the combination of authentic craft spirits and Mississippi River history.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Original 1800s Freight House Still Standing Strong

The distillery’s location in a genuine 1800s freight house gives it an authenticity that can’t be manufactured, with original architecture that tells the story of Le Claire’s riverboat heritage. Mississippi River Distilling was among the first wave of craft distilleries to open in Iowa after state laws changed to allow small distillery operations, making them pioneers in the state’s craft spirits movement. Their use of the historic building isn’t just aesthetic—the thick limestone walls and consistent temperatures create ideal conditions for aging spirits. The proximity to the Mississippi River connects them to a long tradition of grain transport and trade that made this region a natural fit for distilling operations over a century ago.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Exposed Brick and Copper Stills Real River History

You’ll step into a space that feels genuinely historic, with exposed brick walls and original wooden beams creating an atmosphere that’s both rustic and refined. The tasting room occupies the main floor of the old freight house, where you can sample their spirits while learning about both the distilling process and the building’s riverboat-era history. Tours take you through their production area where you can see the copper pot stills in action and understand their grain-to-glass process. The staff is knowledgeable about both the spirits and the local history, making connections between Le Claire’s past as a river town and its present as a destination for craft spirits enthusiasts.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Pioneer Iowa Distillery Worth the Quad Cities Stop

This works well for visitors who appreciate both craft spirits and authentic historical settings, especially if you’re already exploring the Quad Cities area or following the Great River Road. The combination of quality spirits and genuine historic atmosphere makes it more interesting than many newer distilleries that lack this kind of backstory. However, if you’re looking for large-scale production tours or extensive food options, you might find the experience more limited than some larger operations. The real draw here is the intimate setting and the connection to river town history, which appeals most to visitors who enjoy smaller, more personal distillery experiences over flashy tourist attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website for current hours and event schedules, as the Celebration Center also hosts private events that can affect regular tasting room availability. Parking is available on-site, but the historic downtown location means you can easily walk to other Le Claire attractions like the Buffalo Bill Museum or antique shops along the riverfront. Ask about their seasonal releases and limited bottlings, as small distilleries often have special products that aren’t widely distributed. The best time to visit is when they’re actually distilling, typically during weekdays, so you can see the stills in operation and smell the mash cooking.
