ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Working Iowa Farm That Makes Bourbon Too

3-Oaks Distillery sits on a working farm in Holy Cross, Iowa, where the Heim family turned their agricultural roots into craft spirits. Bob and Denise Heim founded the operation in 2014, converting part of their century farm into a distillery that produces bourbon, whiskey, and flavored spirits. The facility operates out of a renovated barn structure where visitors can see the grain-to-glass process happening on the same land where some of the corn is grown. The Heims didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Bob’s background in farming gave him deep knowledge of grain quality, while their decision to add distilling came from wanting to diversify their agricultural operation. They named it 3-Oaks for the three oak trees that have stood on their property for generations. The operation remains genuinely small-scale, with production focused on quality over volume. Visitors get an authentic farm distillery experience here. You’re not walking through a polished tourist attraction but seeing a real working operation where the owners are often hands-on during production. The tasting room maintains that down-to-earth farm atmosphere, and you’ll likely meet Bob or Denise during your visit since they’re actively involved in daily operations.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Corn From Their Fields Whiskey From Their Barn

This is one of the few true farm distilleries in Iowa where you can actually see the grain-to-glass process on the same property. The Heims grow some of their own corn right there on the farm, giving them control over their ingredients from soil to bottle. The family’s deep agricultural background means they understand grain quality in ways that many craft distillers who buy from suppliers simply don’t. Plus, the intimate scale means you’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at genuine small-batch production rather than a scripted tour experience.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Real Farm Life No Tourist Polish

You’ll tour through the actual production areas in their converted barn facility, seeing the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and copper still up close. The Heims or their staff walk you through their process, explaining how they select grains and manage fermentation. The tasting happens in their rustic tasting room where you can sample their bourbon, whiskey, and flavored spirits while learning about the farm’s history. The whole experience feels authentic and unpolished in the best way—you’re seeing real production, not a show.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic As They Come Worth the Rural Drive

If you want an authentic farm distillery experience without tourist crowds, this is your spot. You’ll appreciate 3-Oaks if you’re interested in agricultural aspects of distilling or prefer intimate, educational visits over flashy production. Don’t expect elaborate cocktail programs or restaurant-quality food—this is about the spirits and the story behind them. It’s perfect for folks who want to support genuine family operations and see small-scale distilling in action. Skip it if you need polished facilities or extensive amenities.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since hours can vary with farm operations and production schedules. GPS should get you there, but you’re heading to rural farmland so don’t expect urban amenities nearby. Ask about their grain sourcing and growing process if you’re interested in the agricultural side—that’s where their expertise really shines. Try their bourbon to taste the difference that farm-fresh ingredients make. Weekend visits often offer the best chance to meet the owners personally.
