ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Working Iowa Farm That Makes Wine and Spirits

TYCOGA Winery & Distillery sits on a sprawling property at 2585 195th Street in DeWitt, Iowa, about 20 minutes north of Davenport along the Mississippi River valley. Founded by Tom and Cory Ackerman (the “TY” and “CO” in TYCOGA), this family operation started as a winery in 2012 before expanding into distilling. The brothers converted farm buildings on their rural property into a production facility that now houses both wine fermentation tanks and copper pot stills, creating an unusual hybrid operation that reflects Iowa’s agricultural heritage. The Ackerman brothers didn’t set out to become distillers initially. Tom handled the business side while Cory focused on production, learning winemaking first before diving into spirits. Their decision to add distilling came from wanting to showcase Iowa corn and grains in a different way. The property feels authentically rural—you’re driving through farmland to get there, and the converted barn facility maintains that agricultural character while housing modern equipment. They produce vodka, bourbon, and flavored spirits alongside their wine portfolio. Visitors get a genuine farm-to-bottle experience here. You’re not in a polished tourist facility but rather a working farm operation where the owners are often on-site and happy to explain their process. The tasting room has that comfortable, unpretentious feel of visiting someone’s converted barn, which it essentially is. It’s Iowa craft spirits at their most authentic—no frills, just solid products made by people who’ll tell you exactly how they did it.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Winery Meets Distillery Same Family Property

TYCOGA stands out as one of the few winery-distillery combinations in Iowa, giving them flexibility to experiment with both grape and grain fermentation techniques. The rural farm setting is genuinely authentic rather than manufactured—you’re visiting an actual working agricultural property where the Ackerman brothers have been farming for years. Their approach combines traditional Iowa farming with craft beverage production, using local corn and grains when possible. The scale is small enough that you’re likely to meet the actual owners and distillers, not hired tour guides reading scripts.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Brothers Who Actually Run Everything

You’ll pull up to converted farm buildings surrounded by actual farmland, giving this place an authentically rural feel that many craft distilleries try to recreate artificially. The tasting room occupies space in their converted barn facility, where you can sample both wines and spirits while looking at the production equipment nearby. Tom or Cory Ackerman often handle tastings personally, explaining their process and the story behind each product. The atmosphere is relaxed and conversational—more like visiting a neighbor who happens to make spirits than a formal tourist attraction.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Farm Experience Not Tourist Theater

TYCOGA appeals to visitors who prefer authentic, low-key experiences over polished tourist attractions. If you enjoy meeting the actual people behind the products and hearing firsthand stories about starting a craft beverage operation, you’ll appreciate the personal attention here. The combination of wines and spirits offers variety, and the rural setting provides a nice contrast to more urban distilleries. However, if you’re looking for elaborate tours, formal tasting rooms, or extensive food options, this might feel too casual. It’s perfect for folks exploring Iowa’s craft beverage scene who want to support genuine local operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since this is still primarily a working farm operation and hours can be variable depending on production schedules and seasonal demands. The location is rural, so GPS should work fine but don’t expect urban amenities nearby. Ask about their production process—the owners are knowledgeable and enjoy explaining how they transitioned from farming to beverage production. Try both wine and spirits if you’re interested, since the combination is unusual and shows their range. Parking is easy with plenty of space on the farm property.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

TYCOGA Winery & Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, it’s best to call ahead since this is a working farm operation and the owners want to make sure someone’s available to show you around properly. They’re usually accommodating about scheduling visits.
Can I buy both wine and spirits here?
Absolutely. TYCOGA produces both wines and distilled spirits, so you can purchase bottles from both sides of their operation. It’s one of the few places in Iowa where you can do that at the same location.
How long does a typical visit take?
Plan on 30-45 minutes for tasting and touring, though visits can run longer if you’re chatting with the owners about their process. The informal atmosphere means you won’t feel rushed.
