ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Brown County Hills Hide A Family Dream

Bear Wallow Distillery sits on Old State Road 46 in Nashville, Indiana, tucked into Brown County’s rolling hills about an hour south of Indianapolis. Founded by Tony and Tammie Smiley in 2010, this craft distillery emerged from Tony’s background in engineering and a shared passion for creating quality spirits in one of Indiana’s most scenic areas. The operation runs out of a converted facility where the couple built their dream from the ground up, focusing on small-batch production using locally sourced ingredients when possible. The Smileys started Bear Wallow after years of home brewing and distilling as a hobby, eventually deciding to turn their passion into a full-time venture. Tony’s engineering background proved invaluable in designing their production setup, while Tammie handles much of the business operations and visitor experience. They named the distillery after the area’s history – bear wallows were natural depressions where black bears would roll around, and Brown County was once prime bear habitat in Indiana. Visitors find themselves in a working distillery where you can see the entire process, from fermentation through bottling. The tasting room has a rustic, welcoming atmosphere that reflects the rural Brown County setting, and the Smileys often personally greet guests and share stories about their journey into distilling. The scale is intimate – this isn’t a massive production facility, but rather a place where every batch gets personal attention and visitors can actually talk to the people who made what they’re tasting.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Engineering Meets Moonshine In Bear Country

Bear Wallow stands out as one of the few craft distilleries operating in Brown County, bringing artisanal spirits production to an area better known for tourism and antiques than manufacturing. The Smileys’ hands-on approach means most visitors will meet at least one of the founders during their visit, getting firsthand stories about the challenges of starting a distillery in rural Indiana. Their engineering background shows in the thoughtful design of their production setup, optimized for quality control in small batches rather than volume production. The location itself adds character – you’re visiting a working distillery in the heart of Indiana’s most popular fall tourism destination, surrounded by the same forests that once provided habitat for the bears that gave the place its name.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Scripts Here Just Real Stories

Tours at Bear Wallow are intimate affairs where you’ll likely be guided by Tony or Tammie themselves, walking through their production space to see fermentation tanks, their copper still, and aging barrels. The facility smells like fermenting grain and aging spirits, and you get up-close looks at equipment the owners installed and operate personally. Tastings happen in their cozy tasting room where you’ll sample their current offerings while learning about their distilling philosophy and the challenges of operating in rural Indiana. The atmosphere is conversational rather than scripted – expect genuine stories about equipment failures, regulatory hurdles, and the learning curve of turning a hobby into a business.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Small Batch Charm Worth the Winding Road

If you’re exploring Brown County’s attractions and have interest in craft spirits, Bear Wallow makes for a worthwhile stop, especially for people who prefer intimate experiences over polished tourist productions. The real draw is meeting passionate small-business owners who can tell you exactly how they made what you’re drinking and why they chose each step in their process. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive gift shops – this is about tasting well-made spirits and supporting local craft producers. It pairs well with Brown County’s other attractions, giving you something unique to do between antique shopping and scenic drives. The personal connection you’ll get with the founders makes it memorable in ways that larger operations can’t match.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since hours can vary seasonally and the Smileys sometimes close for production or personal commitments. GPS should get you there, but Old State Road 46 has some winding sections, so allow extra time if you’re coming from Indianapolis or Bloomington. Ask Tony about his engineering approach to distilling if you’re interested in the technical side – he enjoys explaining his equipment choices and process decisions. Don’t rush through the tasting if they’re not busy; the Smileys are storytellers who can share fascinating details about starting a distillery in rural Indiana. Visit during fall if possible when Brown County is at its most beautiful, but expect higher traffic on weekends during peak foliage season.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Bear Wallow Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, it’s best to call ahead since this is a small operation and the owners want to ensure someone’s available to give you proper attention. Hours can vary seasonally or for production schedules, so calling prevents disappointment.
How long do tours and tastings typically take?
Plan on about 45 minutes to an hour for the full experience, though it can run longer if you’re interested in detailed discussions about the distilling process. The pace is conversational rather than rushed, especially if they’re not busy.
What should I expect from a small craft distillery versus larger operations?
You’ll get much more personal attention and likely meet the actual owners, but facilities are smaller and less polished than big commercial distilleries. The trade-off is authentic stories and hands-on insights you can’t get at larger operations where tours are more scripted.
