ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Louisville Craft That Keeps It Real

Prohibition Craft Spirits sits right in the heart of Louisville’s NuLu neighborhood at 436 Baxter Avenue, where it’s been crafting bourbon and rye since opening in 2015. The distillery was founded by Ryan Cecil and Michael Brokamp, two guys who left their corporate careers to chase the dream of making exceptional whiskey in Kentucky’s bourbon capital. They converted a former auto repair shop into their production facility, keeping some of the industrial bones while adding copper stills and rickhouse space. The operation focuses on small-batch bourbon and rye whiskey, with everything from mashing to bottling happening on-site. You’ll find them running a tight ship with just a handful of employees, but what they lack in size they make up for in attention to detail. The tasting room has that authentic craft distillery feel—exposed brick, steel beams, and the constant hum of production happening just steps away. Cecil and Brokamp aren’t just playing at being distillers; they’re serious about their craft and have built a reputation among Louisville’s bourbon crowd for producing solid, well-made whiskey that doesn’t rely on gimmicks or flashy marketing.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Everything In-House In A Converted Garage

What sets Prohibition apart is their commitment to doing everything in-house in a neighborhood that’s seen massive development but still retains some grit. While many craft distilleries outsource parts of their process, these guys handle every step from grain to glass in their converted auto shop. They’re using traditional bourbon mash bills but aren’t afraid to experiment with different yeast strains and fermentation techniques. The location in NuLu puts them right in the middle of Louisville’s craft renaissance, surrounded by restaurants and bars that pour their spirits. They’ve also built relationships with local bartenders who help them understand what works in cocktails, not just neat pours.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Production Floors Not Museum Pieces

Tours here feel authentic because you’re seeing actual production, not a museum version of distilling. You’ll walk through their small facility with one of the founders or head distiller, getting up close with their copper pot stills and fermentation tanks. The space smells like grain and oak, and you can usually catch them in the middle of mashing, distilling, or bottling depending on when you visit. Tastings happen right in the production area at a simple bar setup, where you’ll try their bourbon and rye straight from the barrel or bottle. The whole experience takes about 45 minutes and feels more like visiting friends who happen to make whiskey than a corporate tour.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Small Batch Serious Worth The Drive

If you’re into craft distilling and want to see how small-batch bourbon gets made without the crowds, this is worth your time. It’s not going to wow you with fancy facilities or elaborate presentations, but you’ll leave understanding how whiskey actually gets made and probably with a bottle of something you can’t find everywhere. Bourbon geeks will appreciate the technical discussions about mash bills and distillation, while casual visitors will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Don’t expect Old Forester or Michter’s level production values, but do expect honest whiskey and people who know their craft.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule a tour since they don’t run them on a set schedule like the big distilleries. Parking can be tight on Baxter Avenue, especially on weekends, so give yourself extra time to find a spot. Ask about their barrel program if you’re interested in private selections, and don’t skip trying their rye if you’re usually a bourbon-only person. The best time to visit is during production days when you can see the stills running and smell the mash cooking. They’re closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan accordingly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Prohibition Craft Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, tours are by appointment only since this is a small operation. Call ahead to schedule your visit and make sure someone will be available to show you around.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Absolutely. They sell bottles of their bourbon and rye whiskey on-site, and these make great souvenirs since you won’t find them in every liquor store.
How long does a visit typically take?
Plan on about 45 minutes for the full tour and tasting experience. It’s intimate and unhurried, so you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and learn about their process.
