ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Family Operation That Makes Real Whiskey

Hatfield & Sons Distillery sits on Bluffton Road in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Rick Hatfield turned a longtime dream into reality when he opened the doors in 2018. After years in manufacturing and business management, Rick decided to dive into craft distilling with his sons by his side, creating a true family operation in northeast Indiana. The distillery occupies a converted industrial space that they’ve transformed into a working production facility and tasting room, where they focus on small-batch bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka. What started as Rick’s passion project has grown into a legitimate craft spirits operation that’s putting Fort Wayne on the whiskey map. The space feels industrial but welcoming, with exposed beams and concrete floors that let you know this is a working distillery first and foremost. You can watch the production process through large windows while sipping their spirits, getting a real sense of how everything comes together from grain to glass.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Father and Sons Working Together

This is genuinely a family affair, with Rick Hatfield’s sons actively involved in day-to-day operations rather than just lending their names to the business. They’re milling, mashing, distilling, and bottling everything on-site in small batches, giving them control over every step of the process. The location in Fort Wayne puts them in an underserved market for craft spirits, making them pioneers in bringing legitimate small-batch distilling to northeast Indiana. Their approach focuses on traditional methods with modern equipment, using locally sourced grains when possible and aging their whiskeys in full-size barrels rather than taking shortcuts with smaller cooperage.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Tourist Traps Just Honest Craft

Tours here feel authentic because you’re seeing an actual working distillery, not a polished showroom. Rick or one of his sons will often be the one showing you around, explaining their process from grain selection through distillation and aging. The tasting room has a casual, no-nonsense vibe where you can sample their current releases while learning about their approach to distilling. You’ll get to see their still setup, barrel storage, and bottling operation, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions about their methods. The experience feels more like visiting a craft workshop than a tourist attraction, which some people will love and others might find less polished than larger operations.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth Supporting Real Family Business

If you appreciate authentic craft distilling and want to support a genuine family business, absolutely. This isn’t going to wow you with fancy architecture or slick marketing, but you’ll get an honest look at how small-batch spirits are made by people who are passionate about the craft. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to taste spirits that aren’t widely distributed and to talk directly with the people making them. However, if you’re looking for a heavily produced tourist experience with gift shops and food pairings, you might want to look elsewhere. This is for people who want to understand distilling and taste quality spirits in a relaxed, educational environment.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re open and doing tours, as their schedule can vary based on production needs. The distillery is in an industrial area, so use GPS and look for the address rather than expecting obvious signage. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in whiskey development, and don’t be shy about asking technical questions if you’re curious about their process. Try their bourbon if it’s available, as that’s where they’re putting most of their focus for aged spirits. Parking is available on-site, and the location is easy to find once you know where you’re going.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hatfield & Sons Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
Yes, it’s best to call ahead to schedule your visit. As a working distillery, their availability can depend on production schedules, so calling ensures someone will be available to show you around and provide tastings.
What spirits do they currently have available for purchase?
Their selection varies based on production and aging schedules, but typically includes vodka and younger whiskey expressions. Their bourbon and rye whiskeys are developing as their barrels age, so availability of mature whiskeys may be limited.
How long are the tours and what do they include?
Tours typically last about 30-45 minutes and include seeing their production equipment, learning about their process, and tasting their current spirits. The experience is educational and hands-on, often led by the Hatfield family members themselves.
