Kentucky Artisan Distillery sits on Old LaGrange Road in Crestwood, about 20 minutes northeast of Louisville, in a converted warehouse that feels more like a craft workshop than a traditional distillery. Founded by Stephen and Patty Thompson in 2013, this small operation started as a dream project after Stephen’s retirement from the engineering world. The couple wanted to create something hands-on and authentic, turning their passion for Kentucky bourbon into a working distillery that produces bourbon, rye whiskey, and specialty spirits in small batches.
Stephen brings his engineering background to the distillation process, designing custom equipment and obsessing over the technical details that many larger operations automate. Patty handles the business side and visitor relations, creating an atmosphere where guests feel like they’re visiting friends rather than touring a commercial facility. Their approach centers on control and craftsmanship—they mill their own grain, ferment in small batches, and age their spirits in a climate-controlled environment that Stephen designed himself.
The distillery occupies about 4,000 square feet of production space plus a tasting room that overlooks the production floor. You’re not watching bourbon being made from behind ropes here—you can see the mash tuns bubbling, smell the fermentation, and watch Stephen or his assistant distiller working the stills during production days. It’s the kind of place where the founders remember return visitors by name and where the conversation often drifts from bourbon talk to stories about the challenges of starting a distillery from scratch in Kentucky.
