ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Retired Engineer Who Started Making Bourbon

Kentucky Artisan Distillery sits on Old LaGrange Road in Crestwood, about 20 minutes northeast of Louisville, in a converted warehouse that feels more like a craft workshop than a traditional distillery. Founded by Stephen and Patty Thompson in 2013, this small operation started as a dream project after Stephen’s retirement from the engineering world. The couple wanted to create something hands-on and authentic, turning their passion for Kentucky bourbon into a working distillery that produces bourbon, rye whiskey, and specialty spirits in small batches. Stephen brings his engineering background to the distillation process, designing custom equipment and obsessing over the technical details that many larger operations automate. Patty handles the business side and visitor relations, creating an atmosphere where guests feel like they’re visiting friends rather than touring a commercial facility. Their approach centers on control and craftsmanship—they mill their own grain, ferment in small batches, and age their spirits in a climate-controlled environment that Stephen designed himself. The distillery occupies about 4,000 square feet of production space plus a tasting room that overlooks the production floor. You’re not watching bourbon being made from behind ropes here—you can see the mash tuns bubbling, smell the fermentation, and watch Stephen or his assistant distiller working the stills during production days. It’s the kind of place where the founders remember return visitors by name and where the conversation often drifts from bourbon talk to stories about the challenges of starting a distillery from scratch in Kentucky.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Custom Equipment and Scientific Precision

What sets Kentucky Artisan Distillery apart is Stephen Thompson’s engineering approach to traditional bourbon making. He’s built custom fermentation vessels and designed his own climate control system for aging, treating each barrel like a science experiment with detailed tracking of temperature, humidity, and aging progression. Unlike most craft distilleries that source some ingredients or processes, everything here happens in-house from grain to bottle. The scale is intentionally small—they’re producing around 200 barrels per year, which means Stephen can literally taste every batch and make adjustments based on seasonal changes and barrel performance. They’re also one of the few distilleries in the Louisville area where you’ll consistently find the actual owners on-site and involved in daily operations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Workshop Tours with The Actual Owners

Tours here feel more like visiting a working lab than a polished tourist destination. Stephen or Patty typically leads visitors through the production area themselves, explaining not just what they do but why they make specific choices about grain selection, fermentation timing, and barrel placement. The tasting room has windows overlooking the production floor, so you can see (and smell) active fermentation during your visit. Tastings include their current bourbon and rye expressions plus occasional barrel samples of aging spirits. The atmosphere is conversational and educational—Stephen loves getting into the technical details with anyone who’s interested, and Patty has stories about the early days when they were figuring out everything from licensing to label design.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Bourbon Geeks Absolutely Worth It

This is perfect for bourbon enthusiasts who want to understand the actual process behind small-batch distilling rather than just sample finished products. If you’re looking for a polished, entertainment-focused experience, you might be disappointed—this is more workshop than showroom. But if you want to meet passionate craftspeople and learn about the technical side of bourbon making, it’s exactly what you’re looking for. The intimate scale means you’ll get personal attention and real answers to detailed questions. It’s also ideal for return visits since they’re constantly experimenting with new batches and barrel selections.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your visit—they don’t always have someone available for tours, especially during production days when Stephen is focused on distilling. The GPS coordinates can be a bit tricky since it’s in a converted warehouse area, so look for the Kentucky Artisan Distillery sign rather than relying solely on the building numbers. If you’re serious about bourbon, visit on a weekday when production is happening—you’ll see the stills running and smell active fermentation. Ask Stephen about his barrel aging experiments and temperature control system if you want to geek out on the technical details. They often have barrel-proof samples available that aren’t part of regular tastings, so mention if you’re interested in trying something stronger.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Kentucky Artisan Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, Kentucky Artisan Distillery operates by appointment only. Call ahead to schedule your tour and tasting, especially if you want to visit during production days when you can see the stills running.
Will the owners actually be there during my visit?
Most likely—Stephen and Patty Thompson are usually on-site and often lead tours themselves. Stephen handles the production side and loves talking technical details, while Patty manages the business operations and visitor experience.
What makes their bourbon different from other craft distilleries?
Stephen’s engineering background shows up in custom-designed equipment and precise control over fermentation and aging conditions. They do everything in-house from grain milling to bottling, and the small scale lets them track and adjust each batch individually.
