ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Remedy Distillery sits on Atlanta Highway in Flowery Branch, Georgia, about an hour northeast of Atlanta in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains. Founded by Chad Ralston and Mark Hardiman, two friends who left corporate careers to chase their whiskey-making dreams, the distillery opened its doors in 2017 after years of planning and navigating Georgia’s evolving craft distillery laws. The operation focuses on small-batch bourbon and rye whiskey, with everything produced on-site using traditional copper pot stills. Ralston and Hardiman didn’t stumble into distilling accidentally. Both had backgrounds in business but found themselves increasingly fascinated by the craft whiskey renaissance happening across the South. They spent years researching, visiting distilleries, and learning the trade before committing to their own operation. The name ‘Remedy’ reflects their belief that good whiskey can be a cure for life’s daily stresses – a philosophy that carries through everything they do. The distillery occupies a modern facility designed specifically for whiskey production, with a tasting room that overlooks the production floor. Visitors can watch the mashing, fermentation, and distillation process while sampling the spirits. The atmosphere strikes a balance between serious craft production and approachable hospitality, making it accessible whether you’re a whiskey novice or someone who knows their mash bills.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Remedy apart is their commitment to doing everything in-house from grain to glass, something relatively rare among newer craft distilleries. They source their grains from regional farms and handle every step of production on-site, from milling and mashing through aging and bottling. Their bourbon uses a high-rye mash bill that gives it more spice than traditional wheated bourbons, while their straight rye pushes even further into peppery territory. The location in North Georgia’s climate creates interesting aging conditions – the temperature swings help extract flavors from the oak barrels faster than you’d see in more stable climates, meaning their younger spirits can punch above their weight in terms of complexity.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours at Remedy take you through the entire production process, starting with the grain room and moving through fermentation tanks, the copper still, and into the barrel storage area. The guides – often including the founders themselves when they’re around – explain each step without dumbing it down, assuming you’re genuinely curious about how whiskey gets made. The tasting room has a clean, modern feel with large windows looking into the production area, so you can see the operation even during casual visits. Tastings typically include their core bourbon and rye expressions, plus whatever barrel-strength or experimental batches they have available.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re exploring Georgia’s craft distillery scene, Remedy deserves a spot on your list, especially if you prefer your whiskey education without too much ceremony. The founders are genuinely passionate about their craft and it shows in both the product quality and the visitor experience. It’s not the biggest operation you’ll visit, but that works in its favor – you get a real sense of the hands-on nature of small-batch distilling. The whiskey itself is solid, particularly impressive considering the relatively young age of the distillery. This appeals most to people who want to understand the production process and taste spirits that reflect a specific approach rather than trying to please everyone.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm tour times and availability, especially on weekends when they can book up. The distillery is right on Atlanta Highway, so GPS should get you there without issues, and parking is straightforward. If you’re driving up from Atlanta, consider making this part of a larger North Georgia adventure since you’re already in the area. Ask about barrel-proof tastings if you can handle higher-proof spirits – these often showcase the distillery’s character better than the standard bottlings. The founders are usually around and happy to talk shop if you have genuine questions about their process or the Georgia distilling scene.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Remedy Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, it’s best to call ahead to reserve your spot, especially on weekends. They’re a small operation so tours can fill up, and you don’t want to drive all the way out there only to find they’re booked.
How long are the tours?
Tours typically run about 45 minutes to an hour, including the production walkthrough and tasting. The pace is relaxed and they encourage questions, so timing can vary depending on group interest.
What’s the difference between their bourbon and rye?
Their bourbon uses a high-rye mash bill that gives it more spice than typical bourbons, while the straight rye whiskey is even spicier with a predominately rye grain recipe. Both are aged in new charred oak and bottled at 90 proof for their standard releases.
