ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

White Path Creek Distillery sits in the heart of North Georgia’s apple country on Old Northcutt Road in Ellijay, where founders Jason and Tonya Putman turned their dream of craft distilling into reality. The husband-and-wife team launched their operation in 2018 after Jason, a former engineer, caught the distilling bug and spent years perfecting recipes in their home. Their 3,000-square-foot facility houses copper pot stills where they produce small-batch whiskey, rum, and moonshine using traditional methods combined with modern precision. The Putmans didn’t take the easy route to opening day. Jason spent countless weekends learning the craft, traveling to other distilleries, and working through the complex web of federal and state regulations that govern distilling. Tonya handles the business side while Jason focuses on production, and together they’ve created something that reflects both their engineering backgrounds and their love for the mountain community they call home. The distillery name pays homage to the Cherokee heritage of the area, with White Path Creek referencing the historical significance of the region. Visitors find a working distillery where you can see the entire process from grain to glass. The tasting room showcases their growing lineup of spirits in a relaxed atmosphere where the Putmans or their team walk you through each product’s story. You’re not getting a corporate tour here – you’re getting the real deal from people who are genuinely passionate about what they’re making and happy to share the details of how they make it.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

White Path Creek stands out as one of the few true grain-to-glass operations in North Georgia, with Jason Putman handling everything from mashing to bottling in-house. Their location in apple country influences their approach – they source local grains when possible and have experimented with apple-finished whiskeys that showcase the terroir of Gilmer County. The scale is genuinely small-batch, with their copper pot stills producing limited quantities that sell out regularly to local customers who’ve become loyal followers. What really sets them apart is the personal touch – Jason’s engineering background shows in his meticulous approach to fermentation temperatures and cut points, while the family atmosphere means you’re likely to meet the actual distillers behind your bottle.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grain and the gleam of copper stills immediately tell you this isn’t just a tasting room with spirit shipped in from elsewhere. The space is functional rather than fancy, with the production equipment taking center stage and the tasting area designed for conversation rather than show. Jason or Tonya often handle tastings personally, walking you through their lineup while explaining their process and philosophy. You can see the entire operation during your visit, from the mash tuns to the barrels aging in their warehouse, and the relaxed pace means you can ask questions and get real answers about distilling techniques and business challenges.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in craft distilling and want to see how small operations actually work, White Path Creek delivers an authentic experience you won’t find at larger distilleries. The personal connection with the founders and the chance to taste spirits made on-site make it worthwhile for spirits enthusiasts who appreciate the craft over flash. It’s not going to wow you with elaborate facilities or polished presentations, but you’ll leave understanding more about distilling and probably with a bottle of something you can’t find anywhere else. Casual visitors might prefer larger operations with more amenities, but anyone curious about the technical and business sides of craft distilling will find the Putmans’ story engaging.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting since they’re a small operation that sometimes closes for production or family obligations. The distillery is a bit tricky to find – look for the building marked BLDG 2 on Old Northcutt Road and don’t expect big signage from the street. Weekends are your best bet for finding them open, and if you’re lucky enough to visit during production days, ask Jason about his fermentation process – his engineering background makes for some interesting technical discussions. Bring cash for bottle purchases since they don’t always have card processing available, and don’t expect a full bar experience – this is about tasting their spirits neat or with minimal mixers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

White Path Creek Distillery — Visitor FAQ
