ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery sits right in the heart of downtown Chattanooga on Market Street, occupying a restored historic building that feels both industrial and intimate. Founded by Tim Piersant and Ned Vickers in 2011, this operation made history as Tennessee’s first new whiskey distillery outside of the Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel families in over a century. The duo actually had to get Tennessee state law changed to make their dream happen—the original legislation only allowed distilleries in three counties, and Hamilton County wasn’t one of them. Their persistence paid off, and they opened their doors in 2015 after years of legal battles and fundraising. What started as a passion project between two friends has grown into a legitimate whiskey producer making bourbon, rye, and their signature high-malt bourbon using a unique solera aging system. The experimental facility houses custom-built stills and serves as both production space and tasting room, where visitors can watch whiskey being made while sampling the results. Piersant brings a background in finance while Vickers contributed marketing expertise, but both taught themselves the art of distilling through trial, error, and consultation with industry veterans.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

The experimental nature isn’t just marketing speak—these guys actually use a solera aging system borrowed from sherry production, continuously blending barrels of different ages to create consistent flavor profiles. They’re also playing with high-malt mash bills that push the boundaries of traditional Tennessee whiskey, incorporating up to 25% malted barley compared to the typical 10-15% most distilleries use. The downtown location makes them one of the few urban distilleries in Tennessee, and their small batch size means they can pivot and experiment with recipes that larger operations couldn’t justify. Plus, there’s the whole legal precedent thing—without their efforts to change state law, Tennessee might still only have two whiskey distilleries.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grain hits you immediately, and on production days you can watch the actual distillation process through glass windows. The tasting room occupies the same space as the production floor, so there’s no sanitized tour route—this is the real deal with copper stills, fermentation tanks, and barrels all within arm’s reach. Tours are intimate affairs, usually led by one of the founders or head distiller who can explain their unconventional aging process while you taste through their core lineup. The atmosphere feels more like visiting a craft brewery than a traditional Kentucky bourbon palace—casual, educational, and focused on the craft rather than corporate polish.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re into the story behind your whiskey and want to see actual innovation happening, absolutely. This isn’t for people looking for the grand Kentucky distillery experience with rolling hills and massive rickhouses—it’s for whiskey geeks who appreciate seeing a small operation push boundaries and experiment with new techniques. The downtown location makes it easy to combine with other Chattanooga attractions, and the intimate setting means you’ll actually learn something rather than just walking through a museum-like tour. Casual drinkers might find it too technical, but anyone interested in craft spirits or entrepreneurial stories will find plenty to appreciate.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book your tour online at least a week ahead—their small space fills up quickly, especially on weekends. Parking downtown can be tricky, so arrive a few minutes early or use one of the nearby paid lots. Ask specifically about their solera system if you’re curious about their process—it’s genuinely unique and the staff loves explaining it. Try their high-malt bourbon if available, as it’s the best example of how they’re different from traditional Tennessee whiskey. Don’t expect a lengthy tour—the whole experience runs about an hour, but it’s packed with actual information rather than filler.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery — Visitor FAQ

What’s the solera aging system and why do you use it?
We borrowed this technique from sherry production where you continuously blend barrels of different ages instead of emptying them completely. This creates more consistent flavor profiles and allows us to maintain complexity even in younger whiskeys. It’s pretty unusual for American whiskey but works great for our high-malt recipes.
How long are tours and do I need to book ahead?
Tours run about an hour and include production areas plus tasting. You definitely need to book online ahead of time since we’re a small space and fill up quickly. We recommend booking at least a week out, especially for weekends.
What makes your whiskey different from Jack Daniel’s or other Tennessee whiskeys?
Our high-malt mash bill uses 25% malted barley compared to the typical 10-15%, which creates richer flavors. Plus we age using a solera system rather than traditional single-barrel aging. We also don’t use the Lincoln County Process that most Tennessee whiskeys are known for.
