ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Powdermen Spirits Company sits on Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, Connecticut, founded by Rob Schulten and Andy Hidar who opened their doors in 2018. The name pays homage to the Simsbury area’s colonial history as a center for gunpowder manufacturing, when the Hop Brook valley housed mills that produced black powder for the Continental Army. Housed in a converted warehouse space, the distillery produces small-batch vodka, gin, and whiskey using a custom 250-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. What started as a shared passion project between two friends has grown into Connecticut’s tribute to craft distilling, where they focus on creating spirits that reflect both traditional techniques and modern innovation. The operation remains hands-on and intimate, with Schulten and Hidar involved in every aspect from mashing to bottling. Their approach centers on sourcing quality ingredients and taking time with each batch rather than rushing to market, believing that patience creates better spirits.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

The distillery’s connection to Simsbury’s gunpowder manufacturing history sets it apart from typical craft distillery stories. Rather than just borrowing a historical name, they’ve researched and honor the actual powder mills that operated in the Hop Brook valley during the Revolutionary War era. Their production philosophy emphasizes extended fermentation times and slower distillation runs, which takes longer but allows for more complex flavor development. The partnership between Schulten and Hidar brings together different skill sets that complement each other in both the business and production sides of the operation.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours at Powdermen give you a close look at their production process, with either Rob or Andy typically leading visitors through the distillery floor. You’ll see their copper still in action and learn about their approach to fermentation and distillation, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions about their methods. The tasting portion lets you sample their current releases while hearing the stories behind each spirit’s development. The space feels more like visiting a working craft operation than a polished tourist destination, which some visitors prefer for its authenticity.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in Connecticut craft spirits or enjoy learning about the actual distillation process, Powdermen offers a genuine behind-the-scenes experience. The historical connection to local gunpowder manufacturing adds an interesting educational element you won’t find elsewhere. However, if you’re looking for elaborate facilities or extensive food offerings, this might not meet those expectations. It’s better suited for spirits enthusiasts who appreciate small-batch operations and don’t mind a more intimate, working-distillery atmosphere over flashy amenities.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule tours since they don’t always have regular public hours and production schedules can affect availability. The distillery can be a bit tricky to spot from Hopmeadow Street, so look for the warehouse-style building and check the address carefully. Weekends tend to be better for visits when they’re not focused solely on production work. Ask about their fermentation process if you’re interested in the technical aspects, as they’re happy to discuss their extended timeline approach. Don’t expect a large retail selection since they’re still building their product lineup, but you can purchase bottles of what they currently have available.
