ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Mine Hill Distillery sits on a scenic 5-acre property in Roxbury, Connecticut, founded by Chris Reid and Alicia Reid who turned their passion for craft spirits into a full-fledged operation. Chris brings a background in engineering while Alicia handles the business side, and together they’ve created Connecticut’s first grain-to-glass distillery since Prohibition. The distillery opened its doors in 2015 after years of planning and navigating Connecticut’s complex distillery laws, operating out of a custom-built facility that houses their copper still and production equipment. They focus primarily on whiskey, rum, and seasonal spirits, sourcing grains locally when possible and aging their products on-site. The Reids didn’t just want to make spirits – they wanted to revive Connecticut’s distilling heritage while creating a destination where visitors could see the entire process from grain to bottle. The operation remains small-batch by design, allowing them to experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques while maintaining quality control over every bottle.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Mine Hill holds the distinction of being Connecticut’s first legal distillery since Prohibition ended, making them genuine pioneers in the state’s craft spirits revival. What sets them apart is their true grain-to-glass approach – they mill, mash, ferment, distill, and age everything on their Roxbury property, giving them complete control over the process from start to finish. The distillery operates with a focus on small-batch production using traditional methods combined with modern precision, and their location in the Litchfield Hills provides the ideal climate for aging spirits with Connecticut’s distinct seasonal temperature swings.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours at Mine Hill take you through their entire production process, from the grain room through fermentation, distillation, and into their aging warehouse where you can see barrels at different stages of maturity. The Reids or their team personally lead most tours, sharing stories about starting Connecticut’s first post-Prohibition distillery and the challenges of navigating state regulations. The tasting room has a cozy, intimate feel where you’ll sample their current lineup while learning about the differences between their various mash bills and aging processes. The property itself offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills, and the tour gives you a genuine behind-the-scenes look at a working distillery operation.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in craft spirits or Connecticut history, Mine Hill is absolutely worth the trip. The personal attention you get from the founders and their genuine passion for the craft makes this feel more like visiting friends who happen to distill excellent spirits than a commercial tourist attraction. Spirit enthusiasts will appreciate seeing the complete grain-to-glass process and tasting spirits that you simply can’t find elsewhere. However, if you’re looking for a large-scale operation with extensive food options or entertainment beyond the distillery tour and tasting, you might want to pair this with other Litchfield County attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting since they operate with limited hours and often by appointment only, especially during winter months. The distillery can be a bit tricky to find on rural Mine Hill Road, so use GPS and look for their sign. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in purchasing a personal barrel, and don’t miss trying their rum if it’s available – it’s one of their most unique offerings. Plan extra time to chat with Chris or Alicia if they’re around, as they’re incredibly knowledgeable about Connecticut’s distilling history and happy to share stories about the early days of getting the operation off the ground.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Mine Hill Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Is Mine Hill really Connecticut’s first distillery since Prohibition?
Yes, Mine Hill Distillery was the first legal distillery to operate in Connecticut since Prohibition ended. The Reids had to work closely with state legislators to help create the legal framework that now allows craft distilleries to operate in Connecticut.
Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
Yes, reservations are typically required since this is a small operation with limited hours. It’s best to call ahead or check their website to schedule your visit and confirm they’ll be open.
What makes their grain-to-glass process special?
Unlike many craft distilleries that purchase pre-made spirits or neutral grain spirits, Mine Hill controls every step from sourcing and milling grains through fermentation, distillation, and aging. This allows them to create unique flavor profiles and maintain consistency across all their products.
