ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Durango Craft Spirits sits on Main Avenue in downtown Durango, bringing small-batch distilling to Colorado’s southwest corner. Founded by Dave and Jill Thibodeau, who opened their doors in 2014 after Dave’s career in the tech industry led him to pursue his passion for craft spirits. The couple converted a historic downtown building into their distillery and tasting room, installing a custom copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. They focus on whiskey, vodka, and gin, with their bourbon and rye whiskeys gaining recognition across Colorado’s craft spirits scene. The Thibodeaus didn’t just jump into distilling blindly—Dave spent years learning the craft and studying under experienced distillers before committing to the venture. Their approach centers on using high-quality grains and traditional distilling methods, with most of their spirits aged in charred oak barrels on-site. The operation remains genuinely small-scale, allowing them to control every aspect of production from mashing to bottling. Jill handles much of the business side while Dave focuses on production, creating a true husband-and-wife operation that reflects in the personal attention given to each batch. Visitors find themselves in an intimate setting where you can see the entire operation from the tasting room. The space captures that authentic craft distillery feel—you’re not touring a massive industrial facility, but rather getting an up-close look at how small-batch spirits actually get made. The Thibodeaus often run tastings themselves, sharing stories about their journey into distilling and the challenges of building a spirits business in a town better known for outdoor recreation than bourbon production.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Durango Craft Spirits stands out as one of the few distilleries in Colorado’s Four Corners region, bringing craft spirits production to an area dominated by breweries and outdoor tourism. Their location in historic downtown Durango puts them in a beautifully restored building that adds character to the experience. What really sets them apart is the scale and personal involvement—with Dave Thibodeau handling production duties and often leading tastings himself, you’re getting insights directly from the person who made the spirits you’re tasting. Their commitment to traditional distilling methods using their Vendome copper still, combined with the intimate setting where you can see the entire operation, creates an authentic craft distillery experience that’s become increasingly rare as the industry grows.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a cozy tasting room where the copper still and fermentation tanks are visible, creating an immediate connection to the production process. Dave or Jill often handle tastings personally, sharing stories about specific batches and their distilling philosophy while you sample their lineup. The atmosphere feels more like visiting friends who happen to make excellent spirits than a formal tour experience. You can see barrels aging, smell the mash cooking, and get real answers to technical questions about their process. The intimate setting means you’re not fighting crowds or rushing through a scripted presentation—there’s time to actually learn about what makes their spirits different.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you appreciate genuine craft distilleries where you can meet the actual distiller, this is definitely worth your time. Dave’s passion for the craft comes through clearly, and you’ll leave understanding more about small-batch distilling than you would at larger operations. The spirits themselves are well-made, particularly their bourbon and rye expressions. However, don’t expect the polished tour experience of bigger distilleries—this is about authenticity over production value. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to support true craft operations and enjoy personal interactions with the people behind the bottle. The downtown Durango location also makes it easy to combine with exploring the historic area.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting, as hours can vary seasonally and they sometimes close for production work. The tasting room is small, so weekends can get busy—weekday visits often provide more one-on-one time with Dave or Jill. Ask about their barrel aging process and how altitude affects their spirits—Dave’s got interesting insights about distilling at elevation. If you’re interested in the technical aspects of small-batch production, don’t hesitate to ask detailed questions. Parking downtown can be limited during peak tourist season, but there are public lots within a block or two. They typically have bottles available for purchase, so bring cash or card if you want to take some home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Durango Craft Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do you need to book tastings in advance?
While reservations aren’t required, calling ahead is recommended, especially during peak tourist season or winter months when hours might vary. The tasting room is small, so busy weekends can mean waiting.
How long do tastings typically take?
Plan on 30-45 minutes for a full tasting and informal tour. Dave and Jill enjoy talking about their process, so if you’re interested in the technical aspects of distilling, you could easily spend an hour learning from them.
What makes your bourbon different from larger distilleries?
We use a wheat-heavy mash bill instead of rye, which creates a smoother, less spicy profile. Our small-batch approach means we can control every step of production personally, and we age our whiskey right here where you can see the barrels. The altitude in Durango also affects how our spirits age.
