ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Vapor Distillery operates out of a modern industrial space in Boulder’s western corridor, where founders Ted Palmer and Dave Roth have been crafting spirits since 2014. Palmer brings a background in engineering and homebrewing, while Roth contributed business acumen from his corporate finance days. They started with a 100-gallon copper still and big ambitions to create Colorado spirits that reflect the state’s craft ethos. The facility houses their production equipment, tasting room, and retail space in a converted warehouse that feels more like a working laboratory than a tourist destination. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, gin, and a range of flavored spirits under the Boulder Spirits brand, focusing on small-batch production with an emphasis on local ingredients when possible. The operation expanded over the years as demand grew, but they’ve maintained their original philosophy of prioritizing quality control and hands-on production methods. You’ll find this isn’t a polished visitor center experience but rather a peek into an active craft distillery where the founders are often on-site working the stills.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Palmer’s engineering background shows up in their methodical approach to distillation, with detailed documentation of every batch and constant tweaking of recipes based on results. They’re one of the few Colorado distilleries that produces both clear spirits and aged whiskeys in-house, giving visitors a chance to see the full spectrum of distilling processes during tours. The bourbon uses a high-corn mash bill that’s aged in smaller barrels to accelerate the maturation process at Colorado’s altitude, while their gin incorporates botanicals sourced from Colorado when possible. They’ve also developed a line of flavored whiskeys that goes beyond typical vanilla and cinnamon offerings, experimenting with local honey and other regional ingredients.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours are typically led by Palmer, Roth, or their small production team, so you’re getting information directly from the people making the spirits. The space feels industrial and functional rather than Instagram-pretty, with exposed concrete floors and the constant hum of equipment. You’ll smell the mash fermenting and see the actual production happening if you visit during operating hours. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup where they’ll pour samples of their current lineup and explain the production differences between each spirit. The whole experience takes about an hour and feels more like visiting a working brewery than a traditional distillery tourist attraction.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This appeals most to people genuinely interested in the craft distilling process rather than those looking for a polished entertainment experience. If you want to understand how small-batch spirits are actually made and don’t mind an industrial setting, you’ll appreciate the authentic, hands-on approach. The spirits are solid representations of Colorado craft distilling, though not groundbreaking. Skip this if you’re looking for elaborate cocktail programs, fancy tasting rooms, or scenic mountain views. It’s better for spirits geeks and homebrew enthusiasts than casual tourists wanting photo opportunities.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since tours depend on production schedules and staff availability. The location can be tricky to find in the industrial complex, so look for the building number rather than obvious signage. Weekday visits often offer better chances to see actual production happening. Ask about their barrel aging experiments if you’re interested in whiskey production details. Don’t expect elaborate food pairings or cocktail demonstrations, but do try their bourbon if you appreciate craft whiskey. Parking is straightforward in the industrial lot, and the casual atmosphere means you don’t need to dress up.
